All of the bailout plans seem to be missing both this question and any answer: what happens to all of the GM, Chrysler and Ford cars in "inventory" all around the nation that nobody wants to buy?

The auto dealers claim their problem is that sales have slumped dramatically, BUT they kept pumping out inventory that seems to be parked in lots behind dealerships, filling up shopping mall parking lots, cordoned in empty fields, and all sorts of storage areas all around the nation.

So, the Big 3 get money from Washington to spend, and the inventory remains....but what happens to all of the cars that nobody bought? The Big 3 will continue to make cars with the current tooling, technology and parts which they will ship to dealerships who have to find more storage space. So, this unwanted inventory keeps growing and growing .......until when?

Will the taxpayer next be hit with a stupendous HAZMAT disposal cost for all of these vehicles nobody bought?

Will the car Czar become the Car Santa?

If there's a "home for unwanted toys," do the unwanted cars go to this fairyland as well?

Inquiring minds (at least mine!) would like to know......

Since supply and demand has nothing to do with cost once the government gets involved, you have a good question.

My naive silly answer would have been the price of a Chevy Malibu will drop to a level that they will begin to sell more than the Honda Accords. (I recently rented an 09 Malibu--> I was VERY impressed. Anyway, somewhere there's a post that it's not the # of cars being sold as much as the profit made on each car. I once had a professor say to me..., "you might be the most sought after and best tailor in town, but if you lose 50 cents on every suit you sell you'll soon go out of business."
