View Full Version : Will Morse Blvd be another SR301

Thinking about the new 468 interchange and widening of 468 into a 4 lane divided highway. Will any size truck use this as a shortcut to 27/441 ? What will this do to Morse Blvd. and it's adjacent Villages ? What about the roundabouts ? What about these trucks crossing over the Lake Sumter Bridge onto northern Morse Blvd. ? Not to mention the additional hundreds/thousands of cars per day coming off the turnpike that now use the 301 exit. Will living in the Morse Blvd. area become a traffic and safety nightmare ? :22yikes:

Yes, I had all of these concerns when this was first announced over a year ago, then saw that the extension was for Morse and not Buena Vista. But is any case your concerns are valid. Large trucks cannot stay in one lane on the roundabouts, and can you imagine them yielding to a car in the left lane making a right turn (after going 3/4 around the roundabout)? I had not thought about the short cut aspect or the possible wear and tear to the bridge. A LOCAL DELIVERIES ONLY sign would be a good idea, IF it would be enforced......

My thought is that for the most part truckers are aware of the routes and shortcuts that are best taken. I would think most of them would avoid Morse Blvd. and its many roundabouts.

Way too early to say what measures will be taken to avoid such issues. Although I'm confidant measures will be taken...if necessary.
But I'm not sure any unusual measures will be needed. I don't see where trucks would be coming from that they would want to take Morse to 441? If they're from 301, why wouldn't they stay on 301? If there from the turnpike, they have an interchange at 441 already? Am I missing something?

I personally don't think large truck traffic will be cutting through TV's and dealing with the round-abouts. They are on tight schedules. Heck, I use 301 to get up to 466 myself most of the time, it's quicker than going around all the round-abouts and dealing with slower traffic on both Morse and Buena Vista.

South bound trucks could take the new exit, north bound would still take the 441. Also, truckers not familiar with the area may take the new exit.

Why, with an interchange closer to 441 just a short way ahead?
And truckers taking wrong exits won't be truckers for long.

I believe the closest 441/Turnpike interchange is near the Florida Mall in Orlando.

Doesn't have to be an interchange with 441. There are several interchanges north of the mall. One at CR 470, which isn't that far south...and not that far from 27/441.
NOTE: My bad, Chuck. I just read my post and I DID say interchange with 441. You're right. :) I edited it to say what I meant.

WOW nothing like worrying about spilled milk before it is put in the carton or jug:throwtomatoes:
There always has been truck and heavy car traffic on 468, CR-501 and the 301 468 area. Nothing will change that. The Villages can not control State and CR usage. No need to fret over what might and will be. I am sure a lot of vehicles will use any interchange off the turnpike to 44 and 301. Trucks delivering to Leesburg will most likely continue to use 470 interchange depending on where they deliver. I am sure they will come in on new one also.
Heck I do not worry about big trucks at the round-a-bouts. I worry more about regular motorist who do not know how to drive in them. Big trucks just stay away and give room. Wether it be a 48 or 53 foot trailer, got to give them big rigs room.
Just sayin

One thing is for sure. Build it and they will come. Any exit off a major road such as the Florida turnpike will be heavily used and people living close will be affected. Remember, not only is it an exit, it's also a turnpike entrance heading to and from MCO as well as all points north to south.

I doubt that traffic that includes trucks will take a route that is 35 mph speed limit the entire length.

Nope.
Truckers are not dumb.
North on 441 parallels I-75, with which Fl. Turnpike was designed to intersect a mere 7 miles West of 468.
North on 441 is stop and go to and in Ocala and same in Gainesville, both of which towns are immediately accessible via multiple exits from I-75.

There is. 301 and 27/441. I'm not a truck driver, but I know there is no way Id take 468 to Morse, just to get to 27/441. I'd take the turnpike to 301 (like they do now) and cut over to 466 to get where I was going.

Just looking for a consensus, I hope most of you are right. I don't want to leave the fryer just to be put into a frying pan. Traffic sucks, big trucks suck. I don't need this type of stress going into my autumn years. It's nice the way it is now, don't want it to change.

You already have 27/441 to the east of Morse and 301 to the west. Large trucks will not llikely take Morse unless they have business in The Villages.

It will all come down to what route the truckers GPS takes. Local drivers will know the area and where to avoid but non local truckers will follow their GPS

Once.
If any semi truck driver gets stuck on Morse at 35 down to 30MPH, rest assured channel 19 will light real quick.......end of a problem that will never happen.

Will Morse Blvd be another SR301
Not to be nitpicky, but it's US 301 and has been since I can remember. All through the 60's before I-95 and I-4 were built, it was our main road from Tampa to Baltimore. It now starts in Sarasota and in Maryland it crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge bypassing Baltimore and ends in Delaware, 1100 miles from it's start.
So for one thing, it won't have the nationwide prestige of US 301. I don't see a big need for truckers to get off in this area when you have a large truck stop at the SR44 and I-75 exit, most likely they would want to hit that first. If going to Leesburg and points south such as Clermont or Winter Garden, they have turnpike exits already. If going to Ocala there is exits already. Local deliveries I believe would continue to take US 301 if going north or south. If going east, they may take the new exit but if they have concerns, they could easily post signs at the Morse entrance on 44 with weight limits or axel limits. I think we should give the designers time to figure things out.

Only major truck traffic I can see is local deliveries and so on. There is a cold storage located in Leesburg on 44. Alot of Big rig, large car rooster crusin chicken haulers pick up and deliver there. Oh snap, going back to my Over The Road driving days CB Lingo...
Sorry.
Lot of Trucks pick up and deliver to that place. I could see them using the new interchange at 468. And with the new development taking place between the turnpike and 301 one never knows what might be. Alot of land between the turnpike and 44 that can be developed to join that new place. Who knows what we might be seeing.
Wilbur I have traveled this area since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I can tell you we never thought we would see all the development that has happened so far.
The future will let us know in the next few years. :a040::faint:

to me it seems ridiculous to worry about a nonissue. i am not about to sprout another grey hair (although i could use as many as i could get) over a problem that doesn't exist and would be a logistic nightmare for any trucker foolish enough to use this 'shortcut'.

If I were coming from Orlando and trying to get to the Home Depot in Lady Lake (or any other store in that area), I would take the new interchange and follow Morse north until 466A, take a right and go to Micro Racetrack and then continue on to Home Depot. Despite the roundabouts and 35 MPH speed limit, I expect it to be a lot faster than dealing with all the traffic lights up 27/441 which is likely the current best route. If I would do this to save time, why wouldn't a trucker for whom time is money?

Not only will Home Depot shoppers do this, anyone living south of Sumter Landing will take it to get home. North and west homeowners will take Morse to Stillwater to points north including all the shopping west of Buena Vista on 466.
Morse will be the primary feeder for south of Sumter Landing heading north off the turnpike. Not a bad thing, especially for the "traffic" on Buena Vista south of LSL. I remember when Hillborough Trail was nothing but construction vehicles, now most times it's an effort to turn left onto it. Busier then Pinellas in fact. Just wait till Labelle, Osceola & Pine Hills are built out. Brownwood will be their destination, the smart ones will take 44, not Hillsborough.

One reason...it won't save you (or the truckers) time.
Maybe two reasons...it would also be at least as much of a nightmare for large trucks to come through The Villages as it would be to deal with anything on 441.

Not sure why one would be going from Orlando to a Home Depot in Lady Lake??
Truckers know that a straighter line is not always the fastest in the west. You might have a few that try not knowing, but once will be enough for them.

All construction subs have been warned not to use the gate at Hillsborough and Buena Vista. But with that being said, as long as you have construction going on off of Hillsborough, you will get traffic.

I would assume that much of what ends up on the shelves in that shopping corridor comes from the south up the turnpike.
Your second statement is precisely my point. The straightest line from the turnpike to that area would be up 27/441. However, that route is littered with traffic lights. Slowing to 20 MPH to navigate a roundabout beats sitting at light after light for a minute at a time.

Most of the stuff on the shelf's comes from the north and the midwest on large trucks. Not sure on the thought about navigating round-s-bouts beats lights. If you have never driven a Large Car, Rooster Crusin, Chicken Truck, then you will understand one will do anything to stay away from round-a-bouts and the traffic.
Most of these cats that deliver to these stores around here are local drivers and already know the way of the road. Just like Fedex or Ups drivers, they know which routes to avoid.
Local deliveries such as Publix,, Winn-Dixie I am sure the trucks servicing those stores will use Morse and BV to 466a when delivering. Publix has stores all over, so they go every which away.
Every now and then you also get bed buggers, I mean trucks delivering household goods for people that are moving from the north or what have you to The Villages driving thru here, but that is expected.

Check out the number of distribution centers in the Orlando area. Just because the material may have started from up North doesn't mean that it comes to The Villages from up north.
Watch the "bed buggers" as they go through a roundabout - they are no more of a burden to them than they are a car.

We live near Morse and 466. When inquiring about directions on 441 (going toward
Ocala)we are always directed east on 466 to connect with 441 when going north on Morse is certainly quicker. I doubt GPS will direct people to drive on Morse. At least I hope not.:)

I don't like to use Morris north of 466 unless I really have to. It seems pretty dangerous with the golf cart path on the road and no sidewalks and all those left turns.
