My wife and I are spending Apr 30 to May 31 in The Villages. We will attend church and would like to ballroom dance. What is the appropriate attire? I assume smart casual for both--i.e. slacks and collared shirt for men; skirts and tops or dresses for women. But if I need coat and tie, I will pack accordingly.

I can't speak to the dancing but church attire is very informal. You're right for the church attire except it may be even more informal with slacks for women if you like. Almost anything goes.

NewCovenant Methodist Church accepts anything. You will see men in shorts or long pants. Very very few sport coats. Women casual as well. Sandals worth slacks mostly. Might see some skirts

FL/tropical casual is the order of the day.

Jackets and necties for specified formal attire and casket showings.

We have been here 12 years and have not worn a tie yet.

White dinner jacket for cruises and really, REALLY special events.

Thanks for the quick responses. We plan on attending New Covenant while we are in The Villages for May.

You will be very welcome at New Covenant. If you have time and like discussion classes, stay for our Faithlink Class at 10:30 (Right after 9:15 service). It is one. Of many classes, but this is my favorite as we discuss current events from a Christian perspective. Everyone has a different opinion, but we all respect each other.

The free ballroom dance sessions have no dress code. There are some clubs that require coat and tie but you must be a member so that probably doesn't apply to you.

Hope to see you on the dance floor

When a person is "all dressed up" wearing heels and button down shirt etc, us natives think...ahhhh a newbie!

The men DON'T wear white shoes and only a few couples dress alike. For a lady, shorts or pedal pushers and golf shirts are always acceptable, guys are frequently seen in shorts and golf shirts. This means out to dinner, church, and even at some funerals. Comfortable is the keyword and I think it is attractive.

The other day I was driving past a funeral home where a lot of people were in the parking lot. To my surprise not one man was wearing a jacket. All were dressed for golf. The ladies, however, were all in black or black and white dresses or skirts and tops.

Ah, pedal pushers! Shortened pants that ladies wore to keep their pants from getting caught in the bicycle chain as they pushed the pedals.

Capri's. I meant capri's. (At least I didn't say Bloomers)

Like some of us wore to gym class. (When we walked five miles to school)

The one-piece gymsuit. I had my name embroidered on my gym suit. Mine also had a belt...I hated wearing it!:

The one-piece gymsuit. This model actually looks pretty good in hers. Most of us didn't!!! I had my name embroidered on my gym suit. Mine also had a belt...I hated wearing it!:
Ohhh, please don't take me back to those awful days of bloomers and gymsuits.
Back in the day, we weren't allowed to wear jeans, or even dress pants, to school.
It wasn't considered ladylike. :yuck:

Key West High finally allowed girls to wear pants when we got a cold snap (50's in the Keys is cold) the winter of 1970.

"The times have changed" when it comes to dress. Many men wear shorts and golf shirts to church (about 1/3 at NCUMC). You see a number of casual slacks and open collar shirts and finally a few sport coats and ties. Women dress casual and. wear anything they feel comfortable in. Very Casual is the style in The Villages.

Ballroom dancing--- no clue. "Other" dancing on square or at Rec Center very casual.

I doubt God cares what you wear to church. He just appreciates it if you show up. In my humble opinion.

I am happy to hear what justjim & Barefoot shared and totally agree. If it was up to me I would only wear shorts & a golf shirt for the rest of my days. I refuse to wear a tie ever again. I recently went to church after a small break of 25 years to lite a candle and pray silently for a friends wife who was ill. I was there in shorts and God answered my prayer. What a feeling to step into church again, it was great. I made a deal with the big guy that day and will be attending church once I arrive in TV. That was my offer & I intend to follow thru.

Nucky, I believe God considers your shorts and a golf shirt, after 25 years, to equate to formal wear. We have many wonderful churches in TV. I'm sure He will welcome you in any of them.

I was OK shortly afterward. I'm just glad that bolt of lightning missed me. Whew! :1rotfl:

You are in the hot south, casual is the main dress code around here in Florida. Will you see shorts, dresses, coats and ties at the same event...yes! It's pretty much dress however you like, whatever makes you feel comfortable.

I like dressing up for church, my grandma alway made me wear my Sunday best. Even today when in church I think of my grandma which by the way raised me till 12 when she died at 65.

We see casual everywhere, comfortable, short hair is the norm so it won't blow in your face in the golf cart. AND...wrinkles. Lots of those around on dear faces. AND of course young-er and so beautiful too.

That possibly explains why the bushes beside the front door of First Presbyterian in Michigan caught on fire as my husband walked through after his short 50-year hiatus.
