Chewy continues to elude those who are trying to help him. When we last saw him yesterday (Friday) around 5:30pm, he was running with a limp. Could be injured from car strike or just raw paws from running so much. ( I'm walking with a limp myself from cutting between houses, across golf carts and up and down in preserve by Druid/Hillsborough).
Our plan now is to wait for next sighting and send one person to set trap with food (no, it won't hurt Chewy) in hopes he's hungry & will settle down.
Please if you see him, call one of us or Community Watch...

I feel bad for Chewy and bad for the devoted folks looking for him but the jury is out on the owners. They didn't have him leashed?

Our old boy Barney would stop and freeze in the middle of leaping over an object if we told him to freeze like a cartoon. He took off on us once when he was a pup and we put him in intensive training...military style. Best thing we ever did for ourselves and especially for our now 85lb Boxer. He lives to please and lives the life of Riley. If the law of the land say leash then that's what it will be for the old boy. I feel bad for Chewy & his owner. Hope good news is forthcoming.

Sighting of Chewy this morning off Charlotte Ct. Village of Sanibel/Charlotte area. We didn't get a call -- I checked with Community Watch and they told me of sighting two hours later :/
Trap was set near the last place he was seen -- limping like he was injured. PLEASE if you see him call one of us or when you call Community Watch or WVLG radio please ASK that they call one of the search team so we can move trap to that area.
Chewy must be hungry now and getting weak with his bad leg(s).
Hang in there little boy... We just need a break to get you into care.🙏🏻

If you do see him... Please do not try to chase him, don't look at him or acknowledge hm in any way. He WILL bolt! Just calling his name... he WILL bott!
Please call Susan at 1-504-329-7335 IF you can't reach her, call me at 1-815-370-9115 (Susan should be your first point of contact, as she is working the trap) so she can move the trap if needed. We have learned the hard way, that by trying to catch him... only moves him to a new area and we need him to stay in one place so the trap will work.
I won't even go in an area that I know he might be. He knows me now and bolts when he see me.

Checked the trap early this morning in Village of Charlotte -- no Chewy. (Thankfully no other critters either). We have picked up the trap until we get a new sighting.
The radio station has had NO additional sighting calls, nor has Community Watch. I'm getting worried that he is hurt worse than the limping we witnessed, or possibly too weak to run. Please check around shrubbery, open garage doors, etc. for the little fella.
He is 1 year old and is a brown over white Deer Head Chihuahua, which is a variety I had not previously heard of.
Thank you all for staying vigilant & for keeping the post visible.

I keep hoping that I'll read some good news. Poor little guy.

The places with water in the Villages often have gators and snakes. Geckos are kind of hard to find.
My dog Beau was out on the street in the Crystal River area before a dog catcher snatched him up. He was quite a bit thinner than he is now. I believe he picked up the habit of eating his own poop when he was lose. He either got abandoned by a family in dire straits of some kind or escaped from some his owners.
I do hope Chewy is OK.

Our kitties find a gecko almost every day in the screened in lanai. Water outside from sprinklers if they would lick droplets off leaves.

Trust me Gracie -- neither man or beast should drink from sprinklers or retention ponds here. As my doctor told me when I first moved here and accidentally drank from a non-potable source "Ma'am, we have sewage in the water here!" One that consumes that water will quickly dehydrate - from BOTH ends...

North of 466 has regular water in sprinklers. Just trying to find some hope for the little one. Our kitty survived for eight days without obvious harm all alone.

Bare, wouldn't he eat geckos and find water in places like a kitty would? If Chewy is injured, he may be resting under bushes and not on the hunt for food or water.
I sincerely hope that Chewy is soon spotted, and that he is hungry enough to fall for the "live trap" trick.
I hope that his journey ends with a happy conclusion.

Chewy was resting under a palm for about an hour -- until someone drove up and chased him prior to our arrival with the animal trap. According to the kind resident that watched him, Chewy's back right leg is VERY swollen and he's limping badly.
When Sumter Animal Services opens at 9a tomorrow, I'll work with them on additional proper trap placement.
Thank you all for the phone calls, emails & words of encouragement as we trek on to find Chewy. And thanks for helping keep this post visible...

Sorry to hear about Chewy's limp. Maybe, that will slow him down and keep him in a safer place.

Yes, it was him and we appreciate you calling it in - it was a big help. He had moved from Dunedin to Sanibel/Charlotte overnight. Please continue to call Community Watch with sightings -- please don't chase or even stare at Chewy or he will bolt.
More traps will be set in the area today.

Good luck catching Chewy.
Once in a while there will be a dog at Doggie Doo Run Run that does not want to go home. I recall that Grace took to putting a 15 feet or so leash of Billikins because of the hours a few days before it took to nab Grace's dog before she could get home. And it sounded like she had a golf cart as well as a few men chasing Billikns in a 5 acre enclosed field at Doggie Doo Run Run.
I had leaped on Billikins' 15 feet leash a few times before as well.

The swollen leg and limp may turn out to be a positive - it may slow Chewy down and keep him in one area.
Hopefully, this is the day that Chewy will find a live trap and take the bait. Poor little guy has to be hungry by now.
Let's stay positive and optimistic in our thoughts and comments.

Chewy did go into a trap on Sunday evening in Charlotte. The trap was too small - he backed out but not before polishing off the plate of stinky food as a resident watched. Monday morning he was cornered in Paige Villas in Sanibel around the corner from where the trap was. Kudos to the residents there who stood watch over him for an hour until the owner could get there. With high villa walls, there was only one way out, the exit was blocked with vehicles. Owner went to Cul-da-sac where Chewy was resting and all residents went inside to watch. After several tense minutes, Chewy belly crawled to him.
12 month old un-neutered Chewy is and has been a runner. "An ounce of PREVENTION is worth a pound of cure." Collar/Harness, Tags, Leash, Microchip

I clicked on "Meet the Developer" & this article popped up. So since I'm here! Susan I'm a little surprise that chewy did go to the outside perimeter of the Villages or around the ponds & good thing he didn't, there's a lot of negative things there. Also I'm surprised that he didn't find his way home because he's hungry. Good luck finding him!
