Hello. I know this has been discussed before but I would like to know how year round residents deal with the heat and humidity in the summer. I am considering buying very soon and the stock answer seems to be 'air conditioning'. However I would not like to confine myself to indoor activities in the summer. Especially when I have to walk my dog in the afternoon hours.
So please tell if the heat and humidity can be tolerated during the summer months.
Thank you! Marvin Horlick

We drink a lot of cold beverages. We play outside early in the morning and towards evening. We find amusing things to do, taking classes, doing art, playing music, singing in a group and some stalwart souls continue to ride bicycles and golf and play pickleball. I love the summer. Traffic is down and the pool is just the right temperature.

What Gracie said but may I add ... please, please don't walk your dog in the afternoon. It is way too hot for their paws to be on the asphalt taking a walk. Early morning and evening walks are fine.

Marvin created another thread asking about walking his dog on hot asphalt, and there were 12 responses.
I think this thread deals with his concern about whether outdoor activities can be tolerated.
Some residents tolerate the heat and enjoy the outdoors; others insist on staying indoors with air conditioning.

Marvin, why don't you rent before buying?
It seems to be personal preference, and only you know your tolerance for heat and humidity.

Over six years ago, my wife and I wondered the same thing about the heat and humidity in Florida in summer. We took our home buying trip in late July just to see if it was too bad or what.

We found that the St. Augustine area was too humid. We found The Villages to be less humid than the Washington DC area and actually felt not quite as hot.

Sure, it is hot but we golf early, enjoy the pool, love the squares, stay hydrated, and everything is air conditioned. Summer is a great time in The Villages.

Don't rely only on what TOTV says. Rent for a month, do activities, and see for yourselves.

Like others have said, keep your strenuous outside activity limited to early morning and evening. I've found that even if we get the afternoon rains, which happens often, the evenings are comfortable.

If you compare TV summer weather with many northern states, you'll find they are often much hotter and humid than TV and surrounding areas .Outside activities are limited to the cooler parts of the day. Just prep yourself and home the same as you would during hot summer months. If your outside in the sun, don't forget your sunscreen and water. Also, protect your pets.

The afternoon heat (2-5:30PM in the summer) in this area is pretty bad. However, there are a lot of areas where one can walk in partial shade. Also, if you must walk in the afternoon, use a light umbrella to keep the sun off of your body. Home Depot used to sell a really light umbrella for about $5. If you are overweight, losing those extra pounds will help. Fat is a natural insulator, not to mention the extra work hauling the extra weight around with you. Pay close attention to your pet. It's paw pads will not protect it from the hot pavement. If you think your bare feet would get uncomfortably hot on a surface, then assume it is too hot for your pet. Finally, you will probably acclimate yourself to a hotter/humid climate over time. The first couple of summers may seem unbearable, but over time will not seem so bad.

We came from the Washington DC area and find the summers MUCH nicer here. In DC we always had at least some 100+ degree days and that almost never happens here. More important, there is always a breeze and the air is clean! Hot days in DC were polluted air that didn't move.

We are in the VERY small minority here who almost never use our air conditioner. We open the doors to the lanai, have all our ceiling fans on and enjoy life in the (shaded) outdoors. We ride our bikes every day, in the morning. Come try it out, you'll love it.

Where are you coming from? If you are from the mid-atlantic area from Baltimore south, the south eastern states, or even the plains states like MO, the summers are about the same. The summer season might last a little longer but in terms of temperature and dewpoints, it is not much different. If you are from TX, you will enjoy the cooler summers. If you are from San Diego, well, it is hot here.

Hi biker1 - I am coming from Long Island New York. And yes, it gets hot up hear in the summer as well. But the heat lasts for about a week and it cools down again. In Florida, the heat lasts about 3-4 months, right? Thanks! Marvin

It takes a while to acclimate but you do learn what works for you. A big shade tree and the house facing in the right direction helps. We walk in the morning and later in the afternoon and early evening and love it. We don't stay huddled inside. One help is our Lasko Misting Machine. It's a little contraption, not expensive that attaches to A hose and creates a very fine mist if we want to sit out on a very hot day. We also have one that fits around our patio umbrella. We don't get wet per se, just cool. We tend to use it when company comes over and love it.

Thank you! Marvin HorlickThe heat and humidity "up north" is often just as uncomfortable as what we experience here in Florida. The big difference is that the pattern of heat, humidity and afternoon rain is prolonged here.

What most people do here is get their outdoor activities out of the way before noon--the earlier the better. Then get things done in the afternoon in air conditioning--shopping, movies, club meetings, the pool, etc.

This isn't any different that the frigid winters up north. What do you do when it's brutally cold, windy and snowing up north? Stay in by the fire, or do indoor activities. Frankly, I much prefer the inconveniences of hot and humid summer weather in Florida to the frigid, snowy, slippy-slidy, get bundled up weather in the northern states.

Just do everything in reverse. Go spend a month or two up north in the summer instead of spending a month or to in Florida in the winter ! Problem solved.

Our friends up north are always asking how do we stand the summers. Our standard reply is: when we go outside in the summer, we don't have to put on coats, goulashes and gloves. We don't have to shovel the heat or clean the heat off of the car.

Wrong - when the weather turns :cold:, we head for The Villages.
We stop in the roundabouts to read maps and then we back up.
We dominate the tee time system with multiple requests.
Oh, and we ensure Frogs have difficulty getting space at 6 PM in any good restaurant. :1rotfl:

I'm kidding - we know the "rules", and are very respectful of full-time residents.

The Villages offers a Lifestyle Visit 1-800-346-4556 give them a call first before you do the hotel thing. From what I've heard from those before me it is an incredible bargain and it is structured if you want it to be. Golf Cart included. During the summer months it is a super deal. Good Luck to you! We check in June 12th or 13th. :coolsmiley:

Summer here is like Groundhog Day. Lows are low-mid 70s and highs are low-mid 90s day after day. The weathermen should go on vacation because we don't really need them to make predictions. I find indoor activities during the day but we still go to Happy Hour in the evening. I loved the cold up north, but I can still tolerate summer pretty well down here.

Instead of staying at a hotel, I would suggest you rent a home in The Villages through a rental company or thevillages4rent (I think that is what it is called). I've stayed in hotels in TV but I think renting a home (some come with golf carts) gives you a better feel of The Villages. I've used JD&V Property Management to rent out my home. Give Lois Johnson a call and she will be glad to help you out. If you do rent a home, there will be a cleaning fee on top of the rental price.

I lived in the South/Deep South for 63 years (damn, I'm getting old) and it's very tolerable if you stay hydrated and in somewhat good physical health; you've got to be smart about the heat/humidity and pick your activities for the time of day you're out.

We've been here a month today. I am "insulated" as outlaw said. I'm not a fan of heat but seem to be tolerating it pretty well. Those before me did the suffering for me...I read, comprehend and do what's needed to not suffer from the heat. The storm the evening reminded me of The Munsters....it really is beautiful and I guess the fear will wear off a little eventually. Full timers have told me that this is the worst they can remember and I believe them but it's really not that terrible. I can't wait to call our old hometown and tease them the first time they get snow to the butt and we're at the pool.

GOLF CARTS ! Everything is made tolerable by Golf Carts.

Gracie's post is correct, and virtually everything you might do throughout the day, other than going to the nightly free entertainment at the three town squares, is indoors, and air conditioned.

Simply avoid the extremely strenuous sports activities or other physical exercise outdoors during the hottest part of the day, as you probably do where you live now.

If you are going out in the "heat of the day," use a Golf Cart to go wherever you are going. It's more refreshing than driving a car with the windows down because the breeze swirls around your entire body. Wear shorts, the breeze is even better.

If it is really hot, you can fold down the top half of the Golf Cart windshield. Cool!

There is no place in the property that is actually The Villages that you cannot access by Golf Cart. (Get a gas powered one to avoid concerns about dying batteries far from home.)

Other posts have mentioned dogs. Dogs love to ride in Golf Carts.

How to enjoy The Villages?

GOLF CARTS. GOLF CARTS. GOLF CARTS.

We just got back from renting for a month. We found the weather to be pretty much the same as Charlotte, NC this year. The big difference between the two? In Charlotte, activities were cancelled, so we did end up spending time indoors doing nothing. In the Villages we spent the afternoons in indoor activities (badminton, movies, dance classes) or the pool. Beginning water volleyball was a huge hit. Some days we would golf a bit, and then the rain would come in and cool everything down.

So yes, it's hot and humid. But the thunderstorms can make the evenings lovely, and you probably still do more than at home. Try it out. I bet you find its fine.

Yep, high heat, 94+ and high humidity, that is this area for June July August and September. AC is a temporary solution but then it is up to the individual as to how much of each you care to indulge in. bbb
