My husband is not yet on Medicare so he has Tricare Standard. He purchased a supplement through MCA (Marine Corp Association) which is underwritten by The Hartford Insurance.

They are TERRIBLE!! Getting them to pay a claim is like pulling teeth! With almost every claim we get a letter asking about pre-existing conditions. He has had it more than a year so that should have stopped by now. I am going crazy with medical bills that are not being paid....and we have NEVER had that problem in the past.

Can anyone suggest a GOOD Tricare supplement? He still has 6 years to Medicare and Tricare For Life and by then I will be NUTS!!! Thanks for your help.

I don't have Tricare (wish I did) so I can't recommend a plan. However, the Annual Sumter County Veterans Benefit Resource Fair is at the Savannah Center this Saturday (5/21) from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Perhaps there will be someone there who can help.

Thanks for that! Will try to get there.

Before I went on Tricare for Life, I was on Tricare Prime, never needed supplemental insurance and never paid more than the $12 co-pay...even for $80K cancer procedure.

Before I turned 65 I had Tricare standard. No problems getting claims paid and good pharmacy benefits too. Why does he
need a supplement?

Because Tricare only pays 80%.

You are allowed to get Tricare Prime back in this area I believe if you wave the travel.

When we moved here 7 years ago, we had Tricare Prime. Rules changed a few years later and Prime dropped us because we lived more than an hour from a military base. Now I understand you can request a waiver but it isn't really practical to drive 3 hours round trip to MacDill for routine medical appointments.

When Prime dropped us, we found out that the VA had also changed their eligibility rules and both of us now qualified. The VA Clinic here provides great service and we still have Tricare Standard for emergencies. We also use Tricare for mail in prescriptions. So far, our copays each year has been less than the annual Prime enrollment.
