The legal address of our home in The Villages is Lady Lake, but people use The Villages in the mailing address.
I want to order address labels and am thinking that The Villages is ok. What do most use, The Villages or Lady Lake?
Thanks,
Pat

The Villages...

for our zip code. It is immediately recognized whereas at time "The Villages" is not.
It was surprising to us when we first moved here that folks from other parts of FL never hear of TV.....they all recognize Lady Lake, Leesburg, etc.
...until it is explained to those not from here why it is called The Villages, they have no concept of what the name implies.
And Lady Lake has a nicer sound to it than "The Villages".

This is from the post office web site, www.usps.com:
Cities in a ZIP Code may be referred to by more than one name or spelling. These results indicate the actual city name, as well as any acceptable alternatives.
Actual City name in 32162
THE VILLAGES, FL
Acceptable City names in 32162
LADY LAKE, FL

Am I mistaken or aren't some of the zip codes officially "The Villages, FL"?
It's not all Lady Lake I don't think.

We use The Villages, which I think sounds nicer than Lady Lake, TEHO. I think the mail is sorted strictly by zip code, you could put Istanbul on a letter and as long as you have the right zip code it will get to your box...GN

But... it seems different for 32159:
Cities in a ZIP Code may be referred to by more than one name or spelling. These results indicate the actual city name, as well as any acceptable alternatives.
Actual City name in 32159
LADY LAKE, FL
Acceptable City names in 32159
THE VILLAGES, FL
So, looks like you have a choice of either. When we were living in Tucson, we could use either Tucson or SaddleBrooke (a retirement community). USPS said the actual name was Tucson, but we used SaddleBrooke most of the time. Mail came either way.

If you plan to use businesses surrounding TV, it might be worthwhile to use "Lady Lake" as your address, especially if your zip is 32159. I know of at least one service provider (vet) who has two price listings -- one for Villagers (higher) and one for anyone not a Villager. I wouldn't be surprised if this was true for others as well.

Red.......
Care to share the name of the vet so we can avoid them.:throwtomatoes:

GN, I tried this experiment a few years ago in LA, I sent a letter to an address and put the zip code only, not the city or state and it got there.
And then my lights went out.....LOL! kidding.

Maybe it's only me, but I refuse to use Lady Lake on anything. LL is only a few thousand people, while The Villages is over 70K. Yet LL gets the PO as does Weirsdale, Altoona, Belleville, etc. Sooner or later someone will smarten up and make TV it's own city!!

We use The Villages,
at the post office when we asked, they said either works fine since it's zip code based.

Why order address labels.
Since moving here, I now have more address labels that I could use in numerous lifetimes. It seems a lot of organizations send out a sheet of free address labels with the solicitations for a donation. I have sheets in my name, my bride's name, and both our names, plus a few with misspellings.
Just sit tight, labels will arrive at your mailbox soon. If you don't like 'em, don't use 'em - more will arrive shortly.:evil6:

Well that's true Bryan. Of course the intent is that you give a donation back for the labels. I'll admit that I use them too!

I also use them, but with online banking and bill-paying, much less than I used to. Not buying many stamps either.
Unsolicited mail carries no obligation to abide by their "intent".:mornincoffee:

KNC - I agree, I use no more than 2 stamps per month (other than Christmas cards of course).

If you use a GPS such as GARMIN, it will not recognize The Villages as your location...you neeed to put in Lady Lake even if you reside in 32162

You are correct in that "most" GPS' do not recognize The Villages. I have a Magellan and it gives you the option to enter a city, town or Village, if is is not included in the GPS menu. Put in your zip and viola!! LL now becomes The Villages for all intensive purposes.
My main rub is that WE do NOT live in Lady Lake. We reside just off of 42 in Marion County. I may be incorrect, but I do believe most of the Villages is NOT within the Lady Lake town limits. I see signs "entering Lady Lake limits." But I never see any signs saying, "Leaving Lady Lake". Guess that would be like hello and goodby signs at the Weirsdale city limits.

I'm just curious, how does a Lady Lake versus a TV address affect us....GN

With my sincere and abject apologies, it seems I misunderstood someone. Awhile ago, I had been talking to a traveling/fill-in vet who told me about the practice of charging different rates for TV and non-TV residents. At least, that is what I understood was said. I asked for the name of the vet who did this. It turns out the conversation was not about the vet per se but rather about craftsmen (plumbers, etc.) who had different rates for TV and for surrounding areas. Apparently, the vet's assistant said this was a common practice.
Might be interesting to get local friends to call some repair people and get estimates and then have the same done for the same job in TV.
So, I am very sorry for misspeaking. That will teach me to say something without first-hand knowledge (or at least a disclaimer).

Don't worry Red, you are O-K. The problem today, is that people have to worry about OFFENDING someone. In the world today, people are so concerned about being so politicly correct, not wanting to hurt someone's feelings. People should grow thicker skins and not be too eager to find fault in everything people say, or in here, write. Amen.

Thanks to all! I have decided to go with The Villages. I put our new address in the USPS web site, once with Lady Lake and once with The Villages, and the zip came back the same for both. I personally prefer The Villages. So, The Villages, FL 32159-9430 it will be!!
Now, on to figuring out internet, cable and phone.
