Storage in a V Home

Gene and I are looking forward to moving to TV when we retire. We have visited several times, and we really like the style of the Gardenia home, but we are curious about storage. If the home does NOT have an expanded garage, and there is no hall closet, what do you do for storage? Doesn't seem like there's much room for that.

I was lucky. When I built my Gardenia 4 years ago I was able to put a closet in the den so I have plenty of storage. What about using your attic?

Have a yardsale......a BIG one.....3 or 4 times. And then make friends with the driver of the Salvation Army truck. And then, a good summer entertainment: Put stuff at the end of your driveway and then wager how long it'll take for someone to take it away. Soon, your friends and family will learn to lock their car doors when visiting or find little "treasures" in the backseat when they leave.

We have a gardenia. We removed the sink in the laundry room and installed wall cabinets the entire length of the wall and base cabinets where the sink use to be.

We put wall cabinets in the den .

We put pull down stairs into the garage attic, and put additional plywood in the attic floor.

We installed several large cabinets in the garage and also what really helped in the garage is that I bought a hanging storage platform from Lowes. It is a square rack that is attached to the ceiling in the garage. They come in two sizes . Ours are about 5 foot by 5 foot.

We love our gardenia.

When we moved to TV 2 years ago from a 4 bedroom, 2-storey house, we realized that we didn't need to try to bring everything. We used the 5 second rule...if you couldn't state where it would be used or stored in 5 seconds, it went to either a yard sale or was donated. I haven't regretted any decision that we made that way.

Attics get very hot. Great for Christmas decorations sans candles. Our luggage seems to stand the heat.
When I first moved to Florida I moved from a four bedroom house with full basement. Since here I have lost a spouse, remarried, crammed two households into one smaller house and I am still downsizing.

I was actually totally amazed at how cool our attic remains in the summer. We have 4 roof vents, but what I think really helps is that we paid for a foil like material that goes right under the roof rafters. Forget what it is called. But I can tell you that I dont think our attic ever gets above 105 degrees. This vs our old home in Maryland which must have been 135 in the summer. I was going to install an electric attic fan on a thermostat like I did in Maryland but it was so cool I decided not to. We store a lot in our villages attic and have had no problems with anything.
