What do you think is the best value in a conceal carry gun. I don't have a lot to spend, but I don't want to break the bank either.
I've ben looking at the SCCY CPX2 which is made here in Florida. There are a lot of good reviews online on it.
From what I understand, the CPX1 had a lot of trouble with the safety but the CPX2 doesn't have one.
Does anyone here have one or know someone that owns one?

S&W Bodyguard .380. Nice and small; lightweight; fits just perfectly in a front pocket. Should be able to get one for around $325.

Being a retired Trooper, I think the Ruger 380 is a great pistol. I have the Kel tec, but the Ruger is a better gun. It's small and powerful. A good gun to carry. You don't want anything to big or you won't carry it. A great choice.

If I was to get one IMO I prefer simple revolver, 38 cal. Double action in stub nose. You pull the trigger it goes off up to 6 times, no jams. After than you can use it as hammer or club and full frame construction won't fall apart.:ohdear:

I've read some negative reviews of the Ruger LCP. I understand that it doesn't have sights. I have a friend who's trying to get rid of one now because he doesn't like it.
I also would like to have a larger capacity. I'm afraid that in a tense situation where I might be forced to use it, I might miss. The SCCY comes wth a 10 round magazine.
It's a relatively new product made right here in Daytona.

But you also have to balance that against the fact that smaller guns tend to have a lot of kickback making them not so much fun to shoot at the range an possibly less accurate in an emergency situation.

Totally agree regarding the SW Bodyguard. I wear glasses, as most seniors do, and use them for sighting accurately. In case of an emergency situation, if my glasses are not immediately available the laser sight is invaluable. The safety is also a necessity for my needs.

Ok. I'm going to say it. Check out the Glock 42. It's the new Glock .380. It is a little bit bigger than your typical 380, and some 9mm, but it has a longer sight line and is single stack. So it fits in your front jeans pocket pretty well. I have tried smaller (Kahr). But the Glock shoots more accurately in my book. And it is very reliable and trouble free. But, I think they are going for about $400-$450. I know. "Glocks suck. They're ugly. They are overpriced." But darn, they are simple, reliable, and accurate. If you are retired military or LEO, you can get on the wait list for their Blue label? program gun prices. It saves you about $100, which makes Glock very competitive.

I would be inclined to listen to the men who carried everyday for their livelihood. They know best! Great subject. I am partial to Smith & Wesson.
I understand the opposition to certain people owning a gun. Two guys I worked with were given a license to purchase a handgun and please trust my opinion,,,there is no way that either should have any access to a weapon..they are about as stable as Jello.

I have the Ruger LCP 380, I picked it up about five years ago at the Shoot Straight Gun Shop in Apopka. That's about 45 min down 441. I paid $299 and also at Gander Mountain in Ocala they are usually priced at $299.
The new chain called Rural King, they have one in Leesburg, it's actually not that far, it's in a shopping center just before the Hwy 27/441 split. They're a combination of Home Depot, a gun shop and a Walmart. Really good prices. I picked up a little bigger pistol the EAA SAR K2P for $279, it's a 9mm and the mag holds about 16 or 17. That was not for carry but for home defense.
EAA SAR K2P 9mm Semi-Automatic Full-Size Pistol 400426 : RK Guns (http://www.rkguns.com/eaa-sar-k2p-9mm-semi-automatic-full-size-pistol-400426.html)
They are advertising the Ruger LCP 380 on their website for $227.99 but show they are sold out. Call the Leesburg store and see if the store has any or know when they will get restocked.
Search results for: 'ruger lcp 380' : RK Guns (http://www.rkguns.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=ruger+lcp+380)
I carry the LCP 380 in a small cloth sleeve I bought on eBay for $5 and have a second loaded mag on the outside of the sleeve with a heavy rubber band holding it. So I have one magazine loaded in the pistol and a second loaded mag attached to the sleeve (holster). I don't worry about not having a safety, when it's in the sleeve you really can't pull the trigger, and anyway it's not that light a trigger. The pistol when loaded is still the lightest and smallest I've seen.

I sold the LCP because of the long trigger pull and lack of safety. I have the S&W BG 380 which has the manual safety & better trigger. I also carry (my favorite) the James Bond Walther PPK 380. It is a little larger, heavier, expensive ($600), hard to find, but is extremely accurate and is single action & double action, plus has a de-cocker. Since this is a very personal decision, I highly recommend you shoot the gun (rent or borrow) and get a feel for the fit, accuracy, & trigger pull, before you buy. BTW 9mm have the cheapest ammo. Enjoy!

I would think long and hard regarding a manual safety. Unless you plan on regular and frequent practice for a long time, a manual safety can be your worst enemy in a panic situation. Even with practice, you may forget to arm in a defensive situation. The numerous cc pistols without a manual safety are very safe as long as you cc in a holster (pocket holster for pocket carry). People even offer a trigger holster that just covers the trigger; doesn't "increase" the effective size of the pistol for pocket carry.

Also buy insurance. Dont worry about sites on a gun you wont have time to aim. Just get close. Remember after 80 to 100 feet you wont hit the target anyway. Because of velocity drop. This is with a short barreled gun.

I wouldn't buy a gun with a manual safety. The average time from the time of an attack until a concealed carry owner fires his gun is about two and a half seconds. Having to disengage a safety could mean the difference between life and death. (Yours, not the attacker's)

As a vet, your copy of a DD214 saves you a lot time, you can skip the classroom training. Go to this website https://licensing.freshfromflorida.com/forms/FormsRequest790.aspx and download the application and do what the website instructs.
You'll need fingerprints, I got mine at the Lady Lake Police Station. They usually have someone on duty that can handle that. They charged $5 and they transmitted them to Tallahassee but you'll also need your hard copy from the police.
You'll need a passport type photo, which will actually be used on the license. I went to the CVS on 441 across from Walmart. They charged $10, I think some Walgreens can do that also.
Take the fingerprints, the photo, the DD214 copy and the application along with a check for about $117 and mail it to Tallahassee, it's all on the application. The license is good for 7 years.
My brother who lives over by Daytona Beach, went to a facility in Jacksonville and they did everything on site in a hour or so. You will have to make an appointment, I'm not sure of the name but search online and you should see something like that and they probably have an Orlando location, or you can do like I did all in one day locally and then sit back and wait 6 - 8 weeks.

I went to Florida Gun Supply in Inverness for the CCW class. He calls it free but he charges $20.00 for what he says is his costs. They do everything there for you except fingerprints but they recommend a fingerprint place onn 27/441 a few miles from TV,n that takes care of everything else for you.
The owner is a bit out there about Muslims and the government, but if you look past that it's a great deal on the class, very convenient and a good place to train.

Once you narrow down your selection. I would strongly recommend firing a couple different models. You need to select something that fits your hand and that you are comfortable with.

Yes, but it's reliable. Will fire when you pull the trigger, no chance of jamming after one shot. Quality in cheap semi-autmatic's can be queationable IMO. Small frames are pretty compact. Like I said IMO reliablity more important to me.

Kick back depends on barrel length. Anything less that .357 or 38 special not going to buck much.

I have quite a few guns and recently replace my $700 Sig P9389 with a S&W Shield 9mm for about $379. It is a great gun and shoots very well.
If you want to go with a .380 get the S&W Bodyguard. It is smaller and easier to conceal. You just can't go wrong with S&W. Every now and then Rural King will have them on sale but you could go to Apoka or Orlando or Tampa and get a better price. Even purchase online but the local dealer taking delivery will have a fee of $25-$30. I would stay away from the off brands like SCCY etc. If you want a revolver you only get 5 shots. That said if you need to use your gun you will likely be up close and personal with the bad guy.
Join a club like the Village Straight Shooters. Go to the range and practice. Just owning and carrying a gun is not good enough. One other thing go on Amazon and buy the book "Laws of Self Defense" and read it.

I had thunder 5 which was the first modern 5 shot shotgun revolver. Good for about 12 feet. After that the 45s or 45-70s started tumbling. Wasn't impress with 410 at 10 foot it would verily penetrate 5 gallon plastic bucket. The judge is much better with longer barrel.
Thunder 5 was good for up close like from your bed to the bedroom door couldn't miss with the 410 load, and beside with the 2" barrel it shot flames about 5'. Loaded it with two shot loads, one buckshot load, one slug load and last 45 long colt or 45-70. Which even with short Barrel and the weight it buck little with the 45-70. Nothing compared to .454

From MANY years of carrying a weapon, as the weapon is coming out the safety is going off. For those new to carrying, the active safety, IMHO, would seem to be safer so they wouldn't accidentally discharge a round taking it out of a sheath or holster.

It is great that you've gotten so many responses, and have seen the basis for other people's selections. What to carry is a very personal matter.
For background, in the Army I wore the Expert marksmanship badge for .45 pistol on my uniform. In the Secret Service I earned the Distinguished Expert certificate with a .38 Special S&W Combat Masterpiece. I carried a variety of pistols at the Sheriff's Office, but I also became a factory certified Glock armorer.
My selection is simple: Glock.
No safety on slide. No hammer. Will not fire if dropped. If the trigger is pulled it will fire. Otherwise it will not fire.
They come in full size, medium, and small, in a variety of calibers. There are also slimmer models with single stack magazines.
My carry choice is usually a "Baby Glock" in .357 Sig caliber, which is ballistically similar to the .357 Magnum revolver round.
But that is just me. A 9MM round can be more than adequate, and the FBI has gone back to that round.
I have sometimes carried .380 caliber, but I put a lot of practice into shot placement with a pistol of this caliber.
What ever you get, practice a lot. It gives you skill, and it's fun!

Aside from the fact that Glocks are fairly expensive, the Baby Glock (Glock 26 Gen4) seems to have a very small grip. Does that pose a problem for you?

I had a Ruger LCP really did not like it, now have a SIG P-380 way better piece, more expensive. Stainless frame is a little bit heavier, softens recoil. in most respects it is a smaller Colt 45, Action safety, etc. Also most 380s offer a 6 round magazine that gives you on more finger on the grip.

Lounging around casually in shorts & tee-shirt, have your SMALL Ruger 380 LCP or S&W 380 bodyguard (gut guns) in your front pocket. Although aesthetically appealing, stay away from the Taurus PT-22's and the PT-25's with the tilt up barrels. I had to return more of these firearms to the manufacturer from the thousands of guns I sold over many years, until we finally quit stocking them. Going out to crime ridden Orlando for the day, wear long pants with a MEDIUM size Glock 42 or S&W Sheild on your ankle or inside your jeans pocket. Going up north and wearing a jacket, holster up your LARGE frame Glock 22 or a Springfield XD-40 or any quality large frame auto your comfortable with for that matter. Going out into snake infested woods, be sure to bring along your Taurus judge loaded with 410 gauge ammo. Also good for the two legged types that might slither into your home at night through a window.
As you can see it's hard to own just one pistol to fit all occasions and attire. I think the largest gun you can conceal comfortably and which you are the most accurate and comfortable shooting is your best choice because your overall accuracy improves with a longer barrel in regard to distance. Problem might be if you get used to alternating between several firearms located on different parts of your body, you might forget which one is where and reach for your car keys instead during a deadly encounter!
Everyone is different but my comfort level is with the semi-autos WITHOUT external safeties. I don't want to have to remember if I left my safety on or off or possibly forget the location of the safety and/or fumble for the safety as each precious second counts during a potential life and death situation. If you do prefer the safety be sure to practice many times over your guns safety and fire functions on the range so that the functionality of your gun becomes natural if you are ever forced to use it during a lethal encounter.

I purchased a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 rifle about 4 years ago at Shoot Straight in Apopka, they had the best price around. They are just over an hour south on 441. They have a shooting range and I believe many pistols to try out. They also have many of the most popular guns in demand and also stock used runs, I traded in a few myself with them. Closer to us in Ocala you have Dick's Sports Good and Gander Mountain which both have nice gun shops but no range and are a little high on price. For example when I bought my rifle, it was $350 at Shoot Straight and $450 at Gander Mountain.

Their competition and located nearby is this older established store Shooting Sports. They also have a range and a large selection of guns, but what I really like is their website lists the price and sometimes how many are in stock. They have great prices and I often use them as a comparison for example with Bud's Gun Shop.

As I mentioned Bud's Gun Shop, they usually have some of the best online prices but of course you'll have to pay the transfer fee charged by the local gun shop and shipping. Look at their price and then look at Shooting Sports online store price and it may be worth a drive to Tampa if the prices are similar.

The magazine has an extension, so that each of your fingers below the trigger finger has it's own individual indentation in the grip to give you a good feel for the grip.
There is one other non-Glock that I have been known to carry on occasion which would be only for personal self-defense at short range. That is the Kel-Tec P3AT in .380 caliber. I consider .380 marginal, and shot placement becomes critical. The great thing about the P3AT is that if you put it into a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster it fits easily into a pants pocket and is virtually undetectable. It is American made in Cocoa, Florida.

I've seen Ruger lcp's on gun broker for $225 you just have to find a FFL licensed dealer to get it shipped to however most any good shop will work with you on that for around $25.00.

While doing a bit of research yesterday, I found that .380 ammo is 50% more expensive than 9mm luger ammo. Doing a lot of practicing could get expensive with a .380.
I'm down to trying to decide between a S&W Shield and a Taurus PT111.
I've read mostly good things about this new Taurus. One guy gave it a good review, but says that the trigger is terrible and that the slide occasionally didn't return after firing. It was very rare that it happened but it did happen. Other reviews were 10% positive.
The difference in price is about $200 which is basically about double. I can get a good deal on the Shield, but it's the one with a safety. The model without the safety is about $30.00 more. Go figure.
I find it interesting that some of you say that you carry when you're going into bad areas in Orlando and places like that. I had an instructor make an interesting analogy. He said that a handgun is a defensive weapon that you would only use in case of an emergency. In that regard it's somewhat like a seatbelt. We don't not buckle our seatbelt because we don't expect to be in an emergency situation on some days. Why would you not carry all the time? Granted, there are some places where it might be more likely that you'll need to use you firearm, but emergencies can happen anywhere. An employee of one of our local establishments was attacked and severely in a parking lot near Spanish
Springs Town Square. If t can happen there, it can happen anywhere.
What is everyone's thoughts on this?

If I were you, I would speak to the guys at the Straight Shooters Club. They are very knowledgeable. My husband told me to stay away from the Ruger, I really liked the gun however each time that I tried to demo, it jammed... (just as he told me!)

After reading up about the Taurus PT111 Gen 2, it seems like a good choice for someone on a budget. If I was buying a CC pistol today I would be very interested. It's the #1 sellings semi-automatic on Gunbroker.com, here's what's available in the Buy Now section.

This shop in South Carolina has them for $199 in stock, you'll have to pay a local shop for transfer fees. There are a couple of pawn shops in Bellview that will do that for $25, and you might be charged shipping.

If you don't want to go that route, Gander Mountain in Ocala lists them in stock for $279. You can see their store on the west side of I-75 at the second Ocala Exit. When checking local gun shops there is one 10 miles south on 301 in Sumterville called Mann's. They advertise in the Sun paper, and I drove down there one day and he had some really good prices.

I like the 'flat earth' color, but they are running $300 to $319 and are much harder to find. Gun Broker only shows one and it's $299.

I bough the S&W Shield.
I figured I might as well go for an extra $200 and get something tat's been a proven performer for a long time.
I've heard both good and bad about Taurus and Sccy but I've never heard anything bad about Smith and Wesson.
I could have bought it locally for $370, but they only had the one with the safety. I got the one without the safety online. It was $30 more, but I didn't have to pay sales tax so its almost even and I got what I want.
I doubt that this is going to fit in my pocket so I guess I'm going to have to look for a holster.
I do plan to join The Villages Straight Shooters.
