View Full Version : Temp up to 97degrees - feels like 102

Hello, I am considering buying a home in the villages but I am concerned about the summer heat and humidity. I saw a few days ago the temperature was 97 and the 'feels like' index was 102. How did you villagers handle that? I know most villagers do indoor activities, etc.
Can you give me any advice to ease my mind about the summer heat and humidity? You can even call me on my cell 516 650 1027. I am in Long Island NY.
Thank you - Marvin

Can be pretty miserable if you're not use to heat or can't be in sun in heat of the day due to skin problems. I came from Oklahoma where summers are hot and humid and I find its just as bad or worse down here. Angle of the sun greater also IMO which sun rays seems hotter.
I do my activity outside early or mid morning and late evening. Pretty much stick to indoor events from 11am to 6 pm. Lots to do to pass the summer which IMO flies by!

Most will agree that during the summer most avtivites take place in the mornings or later in the afternoons. However, there are lots of water activities that take place in the afternoons that beat the heat. Also, during the summer when the sea breezes get blowing, it will rain in the afternoons cooling things off. Yes it gets hot. But it all depends on how you approach it. I have not had to shovel the heat!

DH and I moved here from Minnesota, just over a year ago. We both acclimated very easily. You walk in the shade when possible, take water everywhere you go, and slow down a bit.
We used to heat our house to 66 degrees all winter ~ Now if it is 66, I'm looking for a sweater and a jacket.

Think of it this way - when the Winter temps are freezing in L.I. and the wind chill makes the cold even worse - you probably stay indoors.
Moving to FL simply reverses that seasonal conditioning and you spend more days inside during the heat of the Summer.

Just don't plan any strenuous activities during the heat of the day. After a little shower in the late afternoon, things actually feel better in the evening.

Temps in Illinois along with the humidity are actually pretty close to the same as Central Florida during the summer. You can look up the statistics yourself. The only difference is they (temperature and humidity) are longer in Central Florida.
However, we do have the showers and sea breezes that cools many evenings. My wife will not leave the house without a light sweater even in July. October thru April the weather is "delightful" and really September and May can be too.
The many pools, air conditioned Recreation Centers and the east coast and west coast only 90 minutes away makes everything that much better. Finally, Summer is not a bad time to travel either.

Why don`t you rent a furnished home for a month or two during the summer ? Summer rental fees are usually quite a bit lower than during the peak winter months .
The best way to determine if you can or wish to deal with the peak heat and humidity months would be to try it out in person .

Well, there are those of us who head back north in the summer, thereby avoiding 100 temperatures. And south in winter, thereby avoiding 20 below temperatures. Best of both worlds if you have a home in both places. To each his own, though. Varied seasons usually are more relaxing that a constant hot or cold, though.

Rent in July or August. Rent is reasonable and only you can make the decision about the heat

I have called and talked to you twice in person about the heat. At that time you stated you had also talked to several other members from TOTV. Exactly how much more info do you need?
Sounds like Marvin is really on the fence about the hot summers in Florida.
A solution may be a small house in TV for winters plus a condo somewhere cool for the summer months.

We stay in our courtyard villa for 9 months and our ocean condo in the summer months. Which works great! :)

bluedivergirl: I moved down from Minneapolis area going on 10 years. First five summers were a breeze. However from that point on I found myself praying for a breeze. For my wife its even worse.
I hope you and yours do not experience the same ...Loved the Minneapolis area

I love that. This is so true. There are plenty benefits to being here in the summer. It's more peaceful and less crowded. I don't go out in the heat of the hottest days except to duck in and out of air conditioning or to go soak in the pool. On the other hand my husband plays golf in it most every day and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. Just be sure to wear your sun screen as the dermatologists here make a mint.

It's cheeper to cool a home here then to heat one in brutal winters up north if that helps. Also everyone here is a transplant and pretty much very supportive. You can be as involved or as little as you'd like to be. Personally I've had enough snow to last a lifetime. Oh and we do get seasons here just not as extreme as up north. The birds fly north in the summer and winter here. I personally love the sound of the breeze in the palm trees. Find it can be as relaxing as the sounds of the Ocean. It does get a bit more crowded in winter and they're still building so more people for sure. Good luck with your decision.

Marvin:
You have received good advice.
1. Do things first thing in the morning or later at night.
2. Stay hydrated by drinking 8 to 10 8 Oz glasses of water.
3. Spending a month or two in TV, July and August.
4. Do things indoors at the hottest time, of the day.
5. Beats dealing with the snow.
Only you can decide what you tolerate. All in all, the living here, is a lot easier here, than in Long Island. IMHO
Only you can decide if the heat is too much for you. Your valid concern, is over three months, or so. The other nine months, it's beautiful.
A friend of mine asked, "why do want to live in Florida, the summers are too hot". I replied, "I never seen you having coffee and donuts on your porch in the dead of winter". :D Nuff said.
Originally from NY, I've been here for 3 years and never want to be in the cold and snow belt again, but that's me.

It's true RickeyD, not everyone can afford to own two homes.
But I know many people who own mansions in TV, yet complain bitterly about the summer heat.
For them, the solution might be a modest home in TV.
That could possibly allow the purchase of a condo in cooler climes (or a summer rental).

I do get it. For me a condo wouldn't work. I'm very task oriented, there wouldn't be enough for me to do in a condo to keep me sane. Don't know the OP's situation, just tossing in my 2 cents.

I grew up on Long Island and moved to Tampa in 1997, and moved to T.V. 2 years ago.
So having lived in FLA going on 19 years I have NEVER
gotten used to Florida summers.
What really keeps me here is the quality of life you don't have up in NY.

Over my lifetime I have resided in cities in various parts of the country. What I have found is that it takes about a year but my body adjusts to local climate conditions. That being said, the older I get the better I like living in a warm to hot climate. I no longer tolerate cold (which I never really liked) very well. My body just feels better when it is warm.

As I am down in TV for two weeks, how do you keep the house cool in this hot weather? My two year old Holly design is in a neighborhood without shade trees and is struggling to maintain temperature at 74. In fact, it is now 79 inside with the air conditioner running all of the time. To keep my Ohio house at a temperature of 69 with the outside temp 0 is easy to do. I hope I made it through pickleball 102 tomorrow after only two days to acclimate. Oh boy is it hot today inside and out.

One thing I don't do is run the oven during this hot weather because it makes a big difference in the house temperature. Our heat pump is working harder than normal today for sure.

we have a Holly model. We keep the air at 78 in the daytime and 76 at night. The AC doesn't run all the time, and it's holding temps fine. Have your AC checked.

Our HVAC is controlled by either temperature or humidity or both.
Its more the humidity than temperature that I cannot abide.
Weather is only one factor. Our decision was based on tax laws income, estate, etc However with the weather consider that what you gain in January you lose in June. I loved spring, summer, fall up north and it wasn't the cold winter but accompanying snow that became bothersome.
We were not moving away from any family so that part was easy. I have acquaintances here who can't get back north fast enough because they miss kids, grand kids parents ,etc
Finally I did miss big city living in the beginning but we all adapt

Amen. I've been in Fla for 53 years. In my teens through my 30's I spent a lot of time outdoors. In 1973 I spent 58 hours/week during the summer building the drains for I 95 from Cocao to Melbourne. I could handle the heat but not now in my 60's.......

Munns people must be very busy people this time of year as it took me several tries to get through their system. They can check out my air conditioner next Thursday. As it was leaking coolant on my in warranty check last fall, I hope the fix if needed will be covered by them.
If they are as good as the pickle ball 102 volunteer trainers were today in this heat, I will be extremely happy.

Part of the solution to the heat for me is desire. I want to be here so bad that I am doing as instructed with the water as it is the key. This Villages lifestyle house is beautiful and the air conditioning is a dream. It was so cold it was painful till we got a hold of the best temperature. I've been drinking water like a camel with 3 humps. This heat is like nothing we have ever experienced but I'm determined to make it work.

Please don't take this as picking on you, because that certainly isn't my intent. :)
It's just that I got a big chuckle out of your use of 'suntan lotion.'
I think we all remember when the purpose of putting something on your skin in the sun, was to increase the tanning affect.
We now know of course the extreme damage and danger of the sun outdoors and now we use 'sunscreen.'
My, my, at how things change.

If someone can tell the difference between 97 and 102, then they are really good. Myself, most places here are so cold, that it feels good to go outside and feel nature. We keep our A/C on 83 and anything less is too cold for us. The only time I minded the heat was during the last two Saturday morning softball games, and they only last an hour so it's no big deal.
I've lived in Florida off and on since 1959, that was the 4th grade for me. Also spent about 8 years in Georgia, that place is even hotter. I did spend 20 years up north and the hottest I remember was every August in Baltimore, we would get at least 15 days near 100. I usually went to the BBQ Festival every August, but one year I stepped out on my deck and said, we're staying home this year. They held it at a parking lot in downtown in Bel Air, so it was even hotter between the asphalt and the BBQ ovens cooking.

They need to "wand" the evaporator and condenser coils with a refrigerant sensor. If it was down 2 pounds then there are only two possibilities; the system was undercharged or there is a leak. They should never have left without looking for a leak and scheduling a repair date if they have to order parts. Leaks don't repair themselves.

If someone can tell the difference between 97 and 102, then they are really good.
The flip side of that are the folks who say "after minus 20F, it doesn't really matter."
That instantly tells me they've never been in minus 50F (ambient, no wind chill equivalency), or even probably minus 20.
