Android/Google photo app problem

I have a Nexus 5 phone and suddenly when I send photos to my computer or to gmail they are converted to Word. Of course my grandchildren are here this week and I plan to take lots of photos. HELP! I think the phone had a system update recently. It is android 6.0.1. I am using the Google photo app that came with the phone.

If u also access the photos on your computer using Google photo gallery you should be fine?

That works to see the pics on my computer. I still can't send my pics to gmail without it getting converted to Word. Just can't figure out why. Thanks for your reminder about Google photos.
