Hi, All! Well, we finally moved into our place in Bonita last week. We are delighted to be here! One question: we have been inundated with phone call from environmental companies wanting to test our water and - I'm sure - sell us a filtration system. What is the scoop? Thanks.

Water softener companies. They high pressure you to buy a system starting out around $5000.00. Reducing the price to about $2000. if you don't bite. If you want soft water you can have a softener and whole house charcoal filter installed for about $800. We have had a water softener for the past 35 years, 3 houses up north and we did install one here. The water here is hard, a lot of limestone, but if you don't mind it it is not a problem or dangerous. We just like soft water.

Also, if you're at all handy, you can install one yourself. They sell them at most places that sell appliances: Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, etc.

welcome to the villages!! Unfortunately when we first moved in we were bombarded with all kinds of calls. it's very annoying. try to get on the do not call list asap. They are like leaches trying to sell you everything!!

It isn't as cold, nor does it taste quite as good as good ol' Lake Michigan water. But it's not as hard either. They send a report on water quality to each homeowner each year. The water from the Florida aquifer is fine. Save yourself some money and tell the water treatment salesmen to go away.

Thank you, all. You confirmed my suspicions. I already put our number on the "do not call" list, but I don't know how long it takes to go in effect.

dont buy anything for at least one month wait until you have talked to people who have been here for a while. Be careful there are a lot of ripoffs out there.

Our house, a resale, came with one of those elaborate $4K water filtration/softening systems which we're happy we have. We're used to softened water from our home in New York State, where our pre-softened water is so hard that we have to take a knife and fork to it.... I agree with the suggestion to live with it for a bit and see how you like it; everyone's taste is different. And indeed you don't have to go with one of these expensive setups; there are alternatives, as pointed out earlier in this thread. Good luck!
