Can anyone recommend a pet friendly beachfront cottage/condo on the gulf for 4 people? Thanks

Have you tried BringFido.com - Pet Friendly Hotel & Dog Travel Directory (http://www.bringfido.com?)
I prefer recommendations myself, but if all else fails, I find Fido handy.

Yes, I've checked many web sites but having had bad experiences before I'd like to have a first hand recommendation. Pictures can be deceiving!

you might look at St. George Island. It's a bit of a drive and I have never been there but they advertise themselves as pet friendly beach--so dogs can actually go on the beach which isn't allowed most other places.

We stayed a month on St. George Island with our two dogs. We rented a house. Great beaches.
There is a campground on the Island. And there are lots of houses for rent.
I'm not aware of any pet-friendly motels on the Island, but they probably exist.
There are motels on the mainland in Apalachicola.
