I was thinking it would be good if people could share w/ others that come down for a week to check out The Villages, closing on their house, moved most of their up North house furnishings with rental truck and need transportation while down here.
Are their cheaper ways to rent a car or car for their short 1 week stay. Pros and cons. What have y'all done?
I guess I am posting this because I and a friend are flying down July 13 to unpack, organize and get rid of what I brought down a month ago. I can't bring my car down yet because I am in the middle of rehabbing house in Waukegan, IL to hopefully sell quickly at a good price. Renting a car for a week costs so much. I am looking at alternatives. I know we can take the shuttle from the airport.
Thanks

Enterprise has an office at Lake Sumter Landing. They offer weekly rates.

Id check online to see what deals there when renting from the airport and local rentals. Given that it is travel season for families, you may get a better deal renting here than at the airport. If you have AAA, see if they have any deals. You could just rent a golf cart for a week but that means no trips to Home Depot, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, Sam's. You'd still be able to go to the stores in the Target shopping center, Wal-Mart, Ace's, but be prepared for very long, hot and tiring rides if you go this route. Golf carts are great and a lot of fun but not if you have to do a lot of shopping, don't know your way around and aren't used to Florida's heat and humidity.

If your taking the shuttle to and from the airport, that is going to cost you $140 TO $180 for two people. You can rent a car from the airport for around $300. So when you consider just the difference the rental becomes pretty reasonable.

When I visit The Villages I always rent a car from Enterprise at the airport. I use Enterprise because it has an office at Sumter Landing. On one visit I had a Nissan with the kind of key that only has to be in the car which has no ignition switch key receiver. One day I drove to a destination outside The Villages and found I could not turn the ignition off. No matter what I did the car's engine would not stop running. I drove it to Enterprise at Sumter Landing. The guy there laughed and said no problem, they could get it to turn off. Well, they could not. They gave me another vehicle to drive. The last I saw of my original car was it being hoisted onto a tow truck bed, engine still running! That is why I rent from Enterprise when visiting TV.

Both these posts are correct.
I think having a car to get around is your best option. It's worth a little more just for the convenience and being to get more done.

I would be inclined to rent from enterprise and have the air conditioned car to move around the villages in.

Take a shuttle from the airport to The Villages Lake Sumter Landing and pick up a car at Enterprise with a return at the airport. Cost for a Hyundia Elantra from July 13 to July 19 is $245. From the Orlando airport for the same time it is $559. will still be less expensive with the shuttle cost.

Make a list of where you need to go. I furnished a brand new house from furniture to dishes in 3 days. Came by shuttle rented a car for 48 hours. Waited for delivery on furniture unpacked things I got at stores did an inventory as I went. Spent 3 days at the pool, got back on the shuttle and flew home. Cost for auto $96.84, shuttle $60. Round trip

Regarding you car items: We had very good luck with Enterprise in the Villages, good service and they do have specials if you ask, my wife is good at that.
You can also do the car at airport or visa versa and they can reverse drop off charges, they did it for us.
On a Cart. Let us say this,,,,,,,,,,,, be very careful.
We found that the local Cart shop really pushes having gas carts instead of electric but then they do have a gas pump so why do electric. Uh, lets just sell gas. We decided to not go with them and bought an Electric EZ Go from AGC carts and it is truely wonderful. No fumes, no jerky flywheel clutch, so quiet, it is really a snap. Also no waiting for service in a long line, they just come out to the house for the first year and take care of anything, great to do business with them. You can also rent carts from other independents, they bring them out to you and pick them up when you are ready.
We did that too, at about 1/2 the regular going price.

I go to Priceline.com and choose from the variety of cars, though, not necessarily bidding on them. We pick it up from the airport. If you do decide to rent from anyone, check in advance with your own insurance policy and credit card company to see if you are covered for collision/liability of a rental car. Otherwise, you may get nickeled and dimed at the counter for things that are not needed when you might already be covered.

Does anyone know where I can rent a golf cart that goes more then 14 mph? I've rented from Villages Golf Carts for guests in the past, but they have these Yamaha gas carts that only go 14 mph.
