View Full Version : Do you like a walk-in shower?

VApeople

We are planning to have a designer house built and one option is a walk-in shower in the master bath. At first we thought it would be kind of nice, but then we realized it takes up more space in the bathroom and it makes everything more crowded.

We like the normal shower in the patio villa we are renting so we thought that would be OK for us in a new home.

Is there any reason for getting a walk-in shower in our new home, except for the fact that it would probably increase the resale value?

Thanks in advance for you opinions.

I assume you are talking about the Roman Shower. Yes I do think it would help with value. I've kind of always liked the idea of it so that if I need to put a walker in it to lean on or a shower chair that it would fit. It has a handicap bar also to hold on to. I just really like ours a lot. It also has a bench to lean on when shaving legs.

I enjoy ours very much. I've heard people complain that they don't like them when it's cold because the steam doesn't build up and create warmth. I got a portable heater for our bathroom, so that's not an issue.

It certainly makes it easier to take a shower for someone who is not completely mobile. We added two extra grab bars and now have a very safe shower environment.

To be honest, even if we didn't need it modified slightly, I would still prefer a Roman shower.

I love my walk in shower & I still have plenty of room in my bathroom. No more washing shower doors & easy in & out. This is a personal preference. I am sure whatever you choose it will be beautiful.

We love our Roman shower. We plan to be here 'til we croak, and were looking ahead to days when a step-in might be difficult. As another stated, the seat is very nice for shaving, and if a illness strikes, you can sit down and shower.

It was the number one requirement for us in a new home. Also try to get it on an exterior wall so you get the natural light coming in.

I wanted a Roman shower so badly - it was high up on my list of "must haves". We found a house that had so many other things including outdoor space that we fell in love with so I settled for the walk in shower. If I had the option in building I would absolutely put in a Roman shower. If all things were equal (which they never are) but if they were I would choose the house withe the Roman.

A walk in shower is a must for any senior ,if you happen to fall in a shower with sliding doors, you could get sliced up--it happened in a community in NC

Thanks for all of your comments. It is clear that all of you really like a walk-in shower and I understand your reasons.

It was the number one requirement for us in a new home.

That is an interesting comment. Why did you want a walk-in shower so much? Why did you believe it would be better than a non-walk in shower?

We were lucky enough to be able to build our house, and the one big mistake was NOT getting the second walk-in shower for the guest bathroom. These are great.

We renovated our bathroom in Tampa a few years ago and built a Roman walk in shower with added grab bars.

Now, in a wheel chair I can still get up to the shower, use a walker to step in, and sit in a shower chair.

I am thankful that we had the foresight to design a shower that I can still use although disabled.

We replaced the tub with a walkin shiower. We have two other tubs we could use. Think disabilities, wheelchair, old age.

I love My Roman shower. My Mom uses a walker now and who knows if she might need to be wheeled into a shower someday. The layout of the bathroom was a huge part on what home I decided to build in 2012.

I believe most if not all of the designer homes that the Developer builds has a Roman shower. That in itself says something important. We love our Roman shower. Every one of my neighbors has a Roman shower. BTY it is very low maintenance compared to any other type of shower.

Our home we had custom built in Illinois several years ago had a Roman shower. The shower was a big selling point. OP, I highly recommend you include the Roman shower in whatever you build or buy here in The Villages.

We have a walk-in shower and love it.
We had one in our Tampa house and it came in handy when I broke my leg in 2009! (never say never will happen) :o

I'm not at all a fan of the Roman showers. But then again, I'm one of those strange folks that love a tub. The great thing about the Roman shower is it does take up enough room in the bath that if I do run across one in a home I'm interested in there is room for me to remodel to put in a walkin shower and a soaker tub.

Our pre-loved home came with a large shower with a shower door and has a huge bench. when my parents were down my father uses a Walker it was easy for him to get in and out because the shower so large. I do have to admit that our closet is much larger than if we would've gotten a Roman walk in shower. I value my closet space it was a good choice for us.

I agree about getting cold not having a door.
We put a shower curtain up and it's nice and warm now.

We are snowbirds who spent our first winter in TV in our new Iris. When we were packing up to return north in the spring, I asked my husband what items I should be sure to pack. His response: will the Roman shower fit in the car? We love it that much.

When purchasing our new home in May I was very excited to have a Roman shower. The first night I used it I changed my mind.....3 reasons:
1.It was COLD.
2.The sloping drain makes me fearful of slipping.
3. I dread having to clean all of that grout in the tile.

My preference (if I get another chance) is a nice walk-in with a glass door and solid surface walls. Obviously I am outnumbered by the opposition....but then again I really dislike tile floors too! They are really tough on arthritic joints and are slippery.

Good luck!!

Been here almost 6 years--installed a 30 minute spring would timer to control the exhaust fan, eliminates all mold and condensation, used to use clean shower spray don't need it anymore. tile & grout stays clean have never used the tub in our guest bath.

I personally believe it's smart to build with the future in mind. I think all homes in The Villages should be built with universal design. You really don't know what will happen in a few years. Planning to age in place could be important to you eventually.

We are looking for a house in The Villages and a Roman Shower is a 'must have'. Haven't done the math to see how much closet space I would give up, but closets in designer homes seem generous . . . I'd give up kitchen space, ha ha. Love the idea of a large shower with no doors or curtain . . . yes, I realize more tiles. This seems to be a matter of personal preference; if you love the Roman shower, go for it!

Thanks for all of your comments. While the vast majority of you love your walk-in (or Roman) showers, the only logical reasons you mentioned were that a Roman shower would be wheelchair accessible and there would not be a glass door to clean.

On the other hand there were these comments against the Roman shower:

1.It was COLD.
2.The sloping drain makes me fearful of slipping.
3. I dread having to clean all of that grout in the tile.

At present, we are renting a patio villa and my wife just complained about how hard it was to clean the sliding glass doors.

So if no one knows of anything to make it easier to clean the glass doors, we will probably tell the designer we want a Roman shower.

I have no comment to make on the Roman Shower, that is your personal choice. I have a flat walled fiberglass shower with glass doors. I use Gel-Gloss Kitchen & Bath Polish. The first time you use it, it's a bit of a workout to use because you spread it on the walls and glass and chrome with a damp cloth, let it dry, then polish off. When it is polished off it leaves a slick finish on both walls and the glass door, the water beads up and can be squeegeed off and then I finish off with a quick polish with a clean soft old towel. This application lasts about six months and then you have to do it all over again.

I believe you said you were in a rental, and from your wife's comments the glass door has been neglected. Try the Gel-Gloss from Ace or wherever, and just polish the glass door to begin with, you will notice a huge difference. If the glass doors have been neglected you may have to do this a couple of times with the Gel-Gloss.

I use it on the bathroom mirror - where my otherhalf seems to splash half a tube of toothpaste every day:D!!! The mirror cleans up with a quick wipe and you are done.

I agree that a walk in shower is almost a must. I took care of my mother who used a walker and a shower stool. It is very difficult to get in and out of a shower when using a cane because the walker can't go any further. I think having a Roman shower and giving up a little extra space in the bathroom is something I would not even hesitate to do.

No door on ours and I do not notice it being cold. But I do think a shower curtain would be better than a door - less cleaning and will not restrict access.

Love our Roman shower, but replaced the tiles with solid surface Jetta Stone....walls, floor and step out area.

We also have a small heater for the winter months when the bathroom is cooler, but we are not cold in the shower, even after the warm water is shut off.

Go to the sink with a rag and soak it with WD-40 and clean the shower door's to perfection in minutes, plus only having to do this once a month is nice. Don't let any drip on the floor as it's very slippery. Don't worry the WD-40 smell goes away in minutes.

I am assuming your shower is a few years old, if so the first time you use Gel-Gloss it will be hard work and you may have to use it a couple of times in some areas, but it will be worth the effort. My shower is 9 years old and it still looks like new. It's the same principle as a car wax, hard work to put on, but great when it's done.

I agree with the Gel Polish...it works great!
We bought a 12 year old patio villa and the tracks, glass door and shower itself are still like brand new! As someone else commented.....they must have been neglected. We have been renting ours out for the last 3 years and it still is in excellent condition! OH...something I was told once was using shower gel as opposed to bar soap helps prevent soap scum. Maybe that's why it's so good....

I also know someone with a Jetta Stone shower and they LOVE it!!

PM me if you'd like to try out our Roman Shower before purchasing.....

We redid our shower when we built 11 years ago it is 7 feet square big enough to be a roll in shower. We have the house for sale and moving to North Carolina. Building a new house there and the shower isnt as large but still a walk in. I will miss my big shower.

I hadn't considered it for that as ours in on an outside wall. We tend to think of the walk-in closet in the master bedroom that is not on the outside wall as our storm shelter.

I like our Roman showers because they have NO glass to keep clean and the water here is full of yucky scum that is hard to remove.

Walk in closet is where we have decided to huddle if a storm is upon us....well Helene and Henry anyway. I will be going from window to window like an idiot.

No good most Roman showers are on an outside wall-best bet in a designer is a master bedroom closet-the one away from the outside wall 0r the hallway on the guest side of the house-no exposure to breaking glass
