I work on Sundays so I don't read the paper until Monday morning hence my reaction to this in "yesterdays" paper.
In the local section I think it was, was a picture of people seated in a church at a wedding. In the very near background was some guy wearing a straw hat!!!! And wearing something that looks like he came from a luai (sp?)
I can't believe it. I grew with etiquette whereby a gentleman always removes his hat when entering a building ESPECIALLY a chuch. And always, ALWAYs wears a suit to a wedding unless it is deemed very informal (like a cowboy wedding, etc where you are expected to wear bluejeans, etc. As that is the theme.
And to make matters worse, apparently no one at the entire wedding took cause to remind this fellow (I won't use the word "gentleman")
as to etiquette and a dress code! This was no kid either. He was very much old enough to know better and dress accordingly.
What has happened to our generation? I thought we were supposed to be role models for younger people in how to act, dress and talk? Geeeeeeeez!

If I were the bride...or the mother of the bride...I would have kindly removed the hat myself...how rude!!

First let me say that I agree with no hat while in the church assuming that is the custom of that church but...
To say what is poor etiquette is a judgment call based on what is considered current etiquette and current fashion.
For example:
There was a time when a woman couldn't show her ankles in public. Was that proper etiquette? Heck I'm OK with seeing some ankles!
There was a time when men wore hats (Fedora's etc.) and suits at baseball games. Was that etiquette proper? I'm OK with wearing a baseball hat and a tee shirt at a baseball game.
The list goes on. Fashion changes. Etiquette changes. Language changes. We need to change with it.
Just my 3 cents.

Go to almost any restaurant, count the number of guys wearing hats (mostly baseball caps) while eating.
Etiquette may change, but not necessarily for the better.:jester:

Yes, etiquette does evolve and change, but still today a hat on a man in church is simply inappropriate, and someone should have quietly said something to him, IMHO....

Sorry Russ
I couldn't disagree with you more ! There is never any justification for wearing a hat in church or for that matter in a restaurant . It is only a sign of a lack of upbringing....Or just a don't givadamn attitude ..
Etiquette has nothing to do with it as their is no such thing as current etiquette ..Its either proper etiquette or it isn't .......Under cover (wearing of a hat or cap) inside a building of worship is never acceptable and the same goes for a restaurant.....I can just imagine what would happen if I sat at my momma's table and didn't remove my cap......
I wasn't going to respond to this thread but the more I thought about it the more I felt I had to give my opinion ,

Along these same lines are the men who do not stand or remove their hats at the parades, etc. when the colors (flag, if you maybe don't know) pass. That is not only rude but totally disrespectful. (Women should also stand.) I was at one parade here in TV where many men sat and certainly did not remove their hats, either. One poor fellow seated in a wheelchair next to them did stand as best he could. What a guy! I understand that some people are not able to stand, but those are not the ones I'm talking about. Just had to get that off my chest, ya'll.

do not use it for an excuse. When you are patriotic you are patriotic. Those who aren't....need not insult those of us who are with such lame excuses.
I am disgusted by the amount of abuse of ones age or disability here in TV...I am addressing the minority that do it....the rest of us are proud and look forward to stand up for my country 'tis of thee!!!!

I don't know why the men were dressed inappropriately or wearing hats indoors, but I'd like to think they had a good reason. Give me a choice between having a beloved friend join in my celebration or not because clothes were lost by an airline, I'd much rather my friend come in whatever was available. If my friend were to be embarassed because of ecsema or surgery on the pate, keep that hat on my friend. If your religion requires a head covering and you don't want to advertise your specific religion, please keep your hat on if it makes you feel comfortable. Far better that you not be embarassed than I worry about a bit of missing ettiquette.
The point is we don't know the facts. These men may have had good reasons for dressing as they did and maybe were uncomfortable but felt the alternative (not being to come at all or being totally embarassed) was far better. If they knew no better than to come dressed casually or keep their hats on, I'd forgive them as easily. To me and, hopefully to Ms. Lopez and her family, having them celebrate the wedding would be far more important.
As to those who don't properly acknowledge the flag and anthem, no comment. Just keep me away from athletes who can't keep still during the singing of the anthem. I truly would like to rip them a new one.

however, practically and statistically speaking, highly improbable.
There are those who don't care...those who don't know any better....and the worst those who know and do it just because they can.
One can safely (by a huge margin) assume 80% have absolutley no reason other than dis respect (knowingly or not).

Your exactly right BILLYTHEKID
When the flag goes by , If your a vet, give a hand salute , If not then cover your heart , If your arms in a sling then use your other hand....and be sure to remove your hat , If you have a pimple on your head then put a band-aid on it. Their is no excuse for bad manners...

I saw this photo in the Daily Sun and "hatman" really bothered me, too... but after looking and looking at the picture, I wasn't really sure it was taken inside the Church on the Square. If somebody still has the photo, could you please take another look at it and give us your opinion? The people in the picture seemed to be behind a metal railing, and I don't remember ever seeing one inside the church. Maybe they were outside on the steps? Isn't there a metal railing on the steps?
