TOTV Classifieds has turned into a WalMart web site

Around half of the postings are from "Carl" offering cheap tat that he obviously gets shipped in by the container-load

Everything is "BRAND NEW-STILL IN SEALED WRAPPER"

I thought this facility was to help Villagers sell unwanted items to fellow Villagers; not to act as a flea market?

Trying to dictate who/what can be sold on this site, is the first step down a very slippery slope.

Who exactly would be tasked with reading every post and determining whether the item, or seller, is appropriate to be posted?

And no, I have never bought or sold anything here....and am definitely not 'Carl.' :D

I agree, it would be hard, however, the appearance given is that a seller with so many "new" items, still in plastic, is actually running a business, and using this site for free advertising.

I understand what you're saying.

Maybe a rule that everything sold here must be 'used' could be instituted, which would certainly reduce the chances of folks like this Carl dude from operating a business?

And the administrators normally catch on quite quickly and put a stop to the businesses unless they pay to be sponsors such as The Prof (who I believe is Carl if my memory is working).

If no one buys his stuff he'll go away. Most "new" stuff I've seen for sale can be had cheaper from a store + you get a warranty.

Possibly a $20.00 minimum for items posted would be a help.

I would have thought that our covenants would not allow us to run a business from our garage. It appears that Carl, aka The Prof might be in violation of said covenants. Would not want to be his neighbor...driveway must look like a Walmart parking lot.

If someone's posts annoy you, consider using "Usercp" (in the orange menu bar near the top of the page) and add them to your Ignore List.

Sometimes I can't believe some of the items put up for sale on the classified ads. Some of them I want to say give them/it to a charity or thrift shop or to someone who might be able to use it. Finally, the trash is collected twice a week in The Villages. As mentioned a good option is to opt out.

I imagine the Ads here are a big job to monitor. If you have something "worthwhile" the time and energy to sell, this forum is an excellent venue.

Thank you, juneroses - I wasn't aware of this facility

Agreed - I have bought and sold a lot of stuff on it over the years (not bought and sold the same stuff, I hasten to add)

Someone going to that extreme, may very well be having some very serious financial issues.

I suspect they may have been selling "filament" light bulbs (having switched to CFT or LED) as some people still prefer those and there is a market in them.

I bought some used toilet paper a few months ago. Man, I really wish I had kept the receipt!

That's certainly a possibility also.

Although I don't personally frequent the classifieds often (I already have too much 'stuff'), my first thought when I see used items priced below $20...is that the seller may be having financial issues and is trying everything to mitigate those issues.

If so, I have a deep empathy for them. :(

May also be someone who's cheap, with much time on their hands. Why throw items away if you can make a buck or two ?
