I tried to take a picnic a few times when I lived at Middlebrook Hall on the University of Minnesota's East Bank-- pretending I understood what my Spanish speaking group of international students were saying-- on the Mississippi which was quite close. The picnic was usually me and the diners were the mosquitoes which were drone sized.
They would be gone soon after the temperatures fell but then you would have to contend with frost bite unless all covered up with clothes and water proof boots and the like.
