I heard a three-some of twenty somethings outside of Ace Hardware where I was getting propane yell out "White Power!" while I was walking to get the golf cart.

I never expected to hear something so offensive in 2016 in the Villages.

It just angers me after all the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960s that we have in some locations pushed ourselves back to the 1950s in some respects.

These were three Caucasians saying this. I am Caucasian but my late younger brother Chuck's wife Grace is a Jamaican-American and was in the Navy as one of the people who supplies the SEAL Teams. She has been to the Villages on several occasions with her son and did pick up on attitudes against their mixed marriage from both races as did my late younger brother Chuck.

I often think back of the scene in Die Hard with a Vengeance where John McClane has to wear a certain placard in the middle of Harlem. The placard says something much worse than "White Power" and if seen by the wrong gang members would get McClane killed rather quickly.

I have become more aware of cruelty than I ever was before in my entire life since I moved here, which was about at the same time I started reading and posting on public media. Anonymous people can and do say terrible CRUEL, bating, pot stirring things just to anger other people.. There was another attempt at a huge fight on this Forum today. The moddies are all saints if you ask me.

You cannot legislate or direct morality or kindness. You cannot make people be good inside, laws can only make them act a certain way or be punished.

I am not above being sucked in, it is hard to walk away from nasty bating statements that you know are largely incorrect and just meant to make people upset.

And I have made those kinds of statements myself at times. Many of us are anonymous but our values show who we are, loud and clear.

I had a professor in college who would say "Well. that classifies them." when someone was reported to say something really dumb. When I read Tal's post, I was reminded of that. And the saying about it being better to be thought of as stupid than to open your mouth and proving it. I'd probably just laugh AT them.

I believe racism is on the decline, but still has a long way to go. It's one of those things that will never go away. I've never understood why it exists in the first place.

I have found most people to be good.

People should remember that state action is required to bring in freedom of speech. There is no right to go into Publix for instance and say whatever you want to their customers or employees. They can just ask you to leave their premises as it is a private company.

A cop could probably not stop someone spouting off hateful words in a public parking lot. But we can ignore them or make a note of the occurrence and hope that they grow up. And there might be a disturbing the peace action depending on how long and where this happened in the parking lot.

I am an old white Republican male and even in the race divided area of west Tennessee and north Mississippi I promoted people of color and females and only because they earned the opportunity and let me be clear there were people under the cover of darkness that did not appreciate my objectivity.

Having said that I am really tired of white guys being sterotyped. I am really tired of all the white guilt that drives policy that harms more than helps and I am tired of this subject of slavery be applied to presentism in this nation. There isn't a person in this country today that owned a slave. And,slavery has been with mankind since the beginning of manknd and no nationality or race has been spared. Until this nation as a whole gets over that fact ,these type of discussions will continue and tempers will flare. Leave the past to the past and move forward. Mourning in all things must come to a close in order for healing to occur.

Keep in mind there are people in society that find it advantageous to keep this race baiting going.

White power, black power, etc are only words unless we give them meaning.

Finally by God's hand or evolution or combination thereof nature saw fit to create different races and with that all have freedoms granted by God/nature Its why so many of us despise totalitarianism

Well said Rubicon. Two of the most racist people I have met in my life were a Tribal Chief's son from the West of Africa who seemed to look down on any African-Americans who came over probably at the hands of some of his ancestors in the slave trade. There were many African tribes that assisted in rounding up slaves from tribes they competed with in some way. Then there was an African-American Law student at the U of MN who I unfortunately befriended who was the biggest mistake of my life in making friends with because of how he treated me behind my back. Often due to how he really felt about Caucasians.

Not using stereotypical thinking does take some intellectual work.
