Colon Surgery

My mother, who is 87, has been diagnosed with colon cancer after a colonoscopy. I was recommended an oncologist for her. We went to the appointment where she explained what our next step should be. She set us up with an appointment for a Pet Scan and then with a general surgeon to discuss our options - if in fact we have any. I was absolutely shocked by that! I would think that a specialist would be more appropriate. I have checked prior posts to see if there are any surgeons who practice nearby that specialize but the last time anyone asked those questions it was three years ago. Does anyone know a specialist in this field? Thank you.

I worked on a surgical floor for 17 years. There is no specialist for colon surgeries like there is for heart & lung surgeries and for female/urinary surgeries. Any reputable surgeon can do colon surgeries. There are some who specialize in colon surgeries when someone needs a colostomy but doesn't want the bag for waste; there's a special surgery for that, usually done at teaching hospitals. Just make sure he/she is board certified. Good luck.

Dr Sam Bunzz does specialize in abdominal surgery. He will guide you in deciding what is best for the patient just as he would his own mother. Excellent surgeon.

I highly recommend Dr. Julian Sanchez at Moffitt- Tampa. He is a Colon/Rectal surgeon. Have had multiple Cancers and seventeen different surgeries in various locations and different surgeons. To me it was the best experience. They can guide you if Chemo/Radiation will be needed. It is a Top Five hospital for Cancer in the U.S. Only 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Villages. Mostly Interstate

He is caring and follow thru at Moffitt is the best.
