My wife and I have been renting in The Villages for many years now. This year for the first time we had a 10% Hotel Tax added to the rental total. Is this a new tax?

State and county taxes should be 9% for rentals less than 6 months
long term rental 6 months or more 0%

This is not a new tax. It's been around for years, but after the tax man comes around, landlords start collecting it.

Thanks for both replies. I assumed tax was included in rental price.
Was aware of State/County tax, it was just this year 'another?'10% was added as Hotel Tax.
Going to have a 'chat' with landlord!

Some Landlords include the tax in the rental price and some charge it separately. Good thing to ask about up front. Review your rental contract closely. We have always included ours in the rental price. Rae

The landlord is not charging the tax, he is just collecting it for Florida. Most of the rentals I have looked at the landlord charges it to the rentres. So be prepared to pay it .

The amount of tax charged depends on the County in which the property is located. The Villages is located over 3 counties...Lake County, Sumter County and Marion counties. They all charge different taxes. This is in addition to what is owed to the State tax.
