Just discovered, on the Garmin website, that you can have lifetime updates for your GPS for $120. That is a deal!

The Garmin deal is excellent. If my TomTom ever croaks the new one will be a Garmin. Hope the folks from TomTom are reading this...

But Garmin replaces units so fast, life time might not be that long. I was going to sign up but was concerned that Garmin might stop supporting my unit before I am ready to replace it.

I have a Nuvi 200W, basic unit, no extra bells and whistles, but it meets my needs. The prices keep dropping on electronic gadgets, the replacement for mine is the 205w, $160 on eBay today, with free shipping.
In a year or two, I'll get a new unit and recycle the current probably by giving it to my daughter.
I'd hate to have a lifetime subscription and be locked into a unit when something better might come along.

I paid Garmin $75 2 years ago to upgrade mine and it still
did not change the I75 exits from the past to the present mileposts

I got the lifetime update ( 4 times a year ) last spring for $99 on Amazon. I've downloaded twice and "The Villages" (used to have to use Lady Lake) is now in there and most (maybe all) of the streets below 466. Of course everything changes so fast in The Villages! It's time for me to update again soon. Oh, it's good for the lifetime of the GPS unit, not your lifetime. That translates to as long as Garmin supports your unit. It is good for that GPS only. You can't use it on another unit and it doesn't transfer. Yours gets stolen - sorry Charlie! Buy another unit and buy another lifetime update.

BestBuy, Staples, Radio Shack, or Wally World.
Take your GPS to make sure of that connection.

I have a way of downloading updates to the PC, but what I saw the site included even Australia. Got a little lost because North America was included, but it appears to be a huge d/l.

Yes same port, it's on the back of my unit.
As I recall, the 1st time you download updated maps from Garmin, you also get software that sets up the step by step proceedure for the update. As others have mentioned, it takes a while but is pretty easy/intuative.

Received Life Time Update as a gift.It does take forever to download but I am now updated to include all golf courses and existing streets in the Villages.Well worth the effort,by the way my unit is a Street Pilot 340 so the older models are no problem.

Some of the older Garmin's cannot be updated. Two friends have two older models and only one could be updated with all the maps in North America and to do that we needed to add an SD memory card as the unit did not have enough memory. The other unit was just too old and did not have a slot to add memory.
