Planning on moving there in a little less than 2 years and am wondering if I really want a golf cart. At first I thought it was neat, then I'm wondering, if I'd really use its much. I'm thinking maybe I'm too impatient to ride 20 mph. If I had one in the garage, would I prefer to take the car or motorcycle instead? I can see the economical advantage of it and the ease of finding parking , but the motorcycle offers the same thing. The cart has the advantage though in bad weather. The motorcycle is really more enjoyable to ride.
So, am I the only one that may not own a cart or want one???

I'm a wannabee also, and don't know if I would want a golf cart also; mostly like you..... I would be so frustrated at riding along at 20mph when I want to get somewhere. And what about when you're slowly rolling along and it starts to MONSOON ? And the mosquitoes..... they really love me!! UMmmmmmm I think I'd rather ride my a/c vehicle but then again..... I haven't visited TV yet, so WHO KNOWS? :a20:

It's a LIFESTYLE. Learn it, live it, love it.

I don't own a cart yet, but we're just part-timers, recently bought.
I do know a couple fulltimers who choose not to own for the reasons you state, they want to get there faster and not worry about weather.

Average new golf cart goes for $8,000. Used in good condition goes for $6,000 plus. But it's the thing to do in TV. And a lot of times the cars on the road aren't going much faster than the golf carts themselves. Go figure.

It may sound strange, but I do know people who rarely use their car! They take their golfcarts EVERYWHERE and enjoy doing so.
CIB, most carts have side and back drop down curtains that protect you from bugs and bad weather so that really isnt an issue. Most days in The Villages are sunny and warm so riding in the cart is really fun and enjoyable. I can understand people in a hurry not wanting to take a cart but once your living in TV, it seems like your never in a rush to get anywhere, thats the beauty of it. Very very different from our up North lifestyle.

Speed limit for most of the roads in the residential and town square areas in TV is 25 MPH... carts are allowed to go 20 MPH. Primary streets like Morse Blvd. etc, are 35. Takes me about the same time (within only a few minutes) to get from my home to the town square or shopping in the cart compared to a car. Reason being is that you can take all kinds of short cuts with the cart. Driving a car, you have to go much further out of your way at times to stay on the roads instead of the trails. So the time you save by going fast in a car is offset by the shorter distance traveled in a cart, plus, a lot more economical in a cart, and fun.

Sailor and I have been here since October 08, and do NOT have a car. We do and go everywhere by golf cart. If it's cold, we have jackets and a blanket, if it rains we have side and back drop downs that do a great job of keeping us dry. We LOVE the Golf Cart Lifestyle!!!:pepper2:

I have played golf with 2 different guys who don't own a car. They both said that if they need a car they rent one. They save the cost of maintainance, insurance, and cost of the car. One fellow told me that he has't rented one in 4 months. When they fly they take the shuttle and rent a car when they get to their distination. Seems to me that I would rather have a golf car than an automobile.

Who's in a hurry? Remember this is Leisureville....No more frustration. The mosquitoes don't like me, but LOVE Sailor and they have not been a problem for him yet!

Hi Silver,
As a soon-to-be Villager we really are looking forward to getting a cart - for all the reasons the previous posters have listed. However, we will definitely need a car (or two) because we won't be able to retire for a few years.
Until you get there, I think it is hard to make the decision. I would try renting a cart for a couple of months when you arrive. That would be a small investment (especially if you move during the "off-peak" season) and would help you make your decision.

LOL, Hijackers!
a lot of comments from folks who love their carts, and likely I'll get one soon enough, but the thread asks who does NOT own one.

I recently bought in the Villages and have a cart. When we visit our home we primarily go by golf cart. I too agree. It is a leisure life. Take your time enjoy the beauty of The VIllages. Golf cart rental at the major courses is about $7.00 I use my own cart and pay little to nothing. I highly recommend a cart for any resident. You will find that you will use your car very little when you visit. If you plan onn renting your residence renters truly want a cart and you charge them accordingly for the use of your cart. I do recommend a gas cart if you are not centrally located in THe VIllages.

John,
You, of course, are right. But I think we are benevolent hijackers!

It's still about the carts.
Just guess that there's not many who don't own a cart, so not many negative comments.

Can't imagine life in TV without one. We use ours for errands, Dr's appointments, shopping, going to lunch or dinner and oh yes, we even use it for golf 2/3 times a week.

Got two carts. Got a motorcycle I will be bringing there. But I actually find the cart the fastest way to get to most places. With the bike, I got to get it out, put on some leather, helmet, gloves, put the garage door opener in the saddle bag, and by the time I get ready to jump on the bike, I am already there in the cart. The bike and car are great for going a distance, but for running around, to the square, to go eat, to the store, the cart is the fastest and most easy way to travel. A car and bike (I didn't say that) will go before the carts.
I own a motorcycle and just bought a house in TV. I will be getting a golf cart, but only because my wife will use it. I much prefer the cycle and would fall asleep going 20 miles an hour.

There is a couple across the street from me who don't have a cart. Everyone else in the neighborhood has one. Some have two.

Thanks for all the replies. I think the best advice was on renting one and see if I like it. I didn't mention that I don't play golf. I'm sure the wife would like one as she doesn't go much over 20 mph in a car anyway. LOL

I'm with your wife. Any conveyance that goes over 10 mph makes me nervous, except for big ships, planes and cars. That's why I like sailboats and trawlers. If you only have a golf cart, how do you get to Home Depot, the destination of choice for some of us?
