Marathon is fantastic! Stayed at a place right on the water called Cocoplum Beach & Racquet Club. It was GREAT. Marathon is ideal cause being in the middle of the Keys you can do day trips to other Keys in either direction. Also it is I think the largest Key beside Key West, it has a commercial airport etc, so there are more things located on it to do.

Great fishing out of Marathon. There is also a state park that you can walk to at the start of the Seven Mile bridge. Check out Banana Bay Resort for accommodations - nice place . There are a few really good restaurants and one golf course that I know of. I agree with the previous poster that it is ideally located for day trips in either direction.

We stayed at the Rock Reef Resort in Key Largo, a few years back. Great sunsets on the Florida Bay side.

Very nice accomodations. Fantastic restaurants. They even have some real beaches....mostly not available throughout the keys.
We day tripped to the other locations like Key West, etc. Much more sanity and much less commercialism than Key West.
Get the best of all worlds in the Keys.

Key Largo: One of the only places in northern USA you will see a salt water crocodile in the wild, other than that, dont like it!
Marathon is real nice. Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key is wonderful. :)
Marco is wonderful! Spent a month there in 1994, have been back for flying visits since, and I still like it! :)

If you want a Island experience go to Islamorada or Marathon with a easy day trip to Key West. Make sure to stop at World Wide Sportsman, http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPageC?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&appID=94&storeID=21 ,for a look around and have lunch at Zane Greys upstairs in the World Wide Sportsman, or Islamorada fish Co. on the dock at the World Wide Sportsman. Also try the fish taco's at Sparky's Landing in Marathon http://www.sparkyslanding.com/ When you leave to come back home take the Card Sound Rd cut around Largo and have lunch at Alabama Jacks. If you want Great beaches do not go to the Keys, most are man made. Bahia Honda state park has a nice natural beach.
Marco Island has fantastic beaches as does Sanibel & Captiva Islands. We do the Keys every year for a week and then stop at Marco or Sanibel on the way home for three nights do do the beach thing.
