View Full Version : Street Name Signs by New Walmart

We were playing Sarasota the other day and noticed that the street name signs by the new Walmart have been installed. The names are all in upper case (capital) letters. I was of the opinion that federal guidelines (law) mandated upper and lower case lettering.

This kind of discussion gives us old people a very bad reputation.
We must find something else to talk about.
So very glad my roof is on so far. Thank you God and the roofers employed by the Morses.
There. Talk about that for awhile.

FWIW, the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) does require upper and lower case letters on street signs.

Sign lettering is normally uppercase letters except various sections of the Manual on Uniform Traffic that destination names may be in lowercase lettering-with initial uppercase.

Only if it is a destination, like would be seen on an Interstate/Freeway/Turnpike.

I just wish they would position the street signs and street lights where you could read them at night. Finding an unfamiliar street at night is a challenge.
Not the subject but it appears we dodged a hurricane---this time.

Nope. From the MUTCD...
"Q: Can lettering on Street Name signs still be displayed in all upper-case letters?
A: No, lettering for place names and destinations on all guide signs, including Street Name signs, shall be in mixed-case lettering with the first letter in upper-case followed by lower-case letters."

The MUTCD/FWHA link I provided in Post #10...seems to contradict that.
I found your link, but this letter I believe is what allows all capital letters on street name signs.
Interpretation Letter 2-603(I) - FHWA MUTCD (http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/resources/interpretations/2_603.htm)
The lettering of Street Name signs is addressed in MUTCD Section 2D.38 and it states that on ground-mounted street name signs that are not on multi-lane streets, the letters should be at least 6 inches high where all capital letters are used, or you can use 6 inches upper-case letters with 4.5 inches lower-case letters.
For local roads with speed limits 25 mph or less, there is an option provided that allows the use of 4-inch letter height and words such as Street, Avenue, Road, or NW may be 3-inch letter height. The letter size of ground-mounted street name signs discussed above was originally added to the MUTCD in January 1997.
A 15-year compliance period was provided. This means the compliance date for increasing the letter size of all ground-mounted street name signs on roads that are not on multi-lane streets is January 2012. On multi-lane streets with speed limits greater than 40 mph, the lettering on ground mounted street name signs should be at least 8 inches in all capital letters, or 8 inches upper-case with 6 inches lower-case letters. This change to the MUTCD was adopted in November 2003 with a 15-year compliance period. This means the compliance date for increasing the letter size of all ground-mounted signs on multi-lane streets with speed limits greater than 40 mph is November 2018.
In other words, the way I read it is that either all capitals or just capitalizing the first letter...are both acceptable.
Not that it's really that big of a deal though, since I doubt the developer/county have been in violation of the regulations for all these years...by using all capitals.

Allow me to tell you why. It is not because The Villages Commercial Properties hasn't wooed them. It is because "at this time they are happy with their distribution", i.e. It costs THEM a lot to build a store and they do careful research on the demographics, population density and competition.
There is NO conspiracy.
You wouldn't be a Walmart snob would you? They have a lot of good stuff at very reasonable prices.

I would hope that the federal government does not move to signs being created in cursive because they do not teach cursive in school any longer and our grand kids would get lost anywhere they went.
Perhaps we should replace street names with pictures. I was on Lion making a turn onto Anole when a car coming from Coyote struck me on the right front fender:D

Speaking of street signs...am I the only one to notice that in the Village of Collier they have a street spelled "Nantuket". Well in MA it is spelled with a "c" between the 'u & the 'k'. I think it makes us seem ignorant.

It is tax dollars from new homes (mostly The Villages) funding their new street signs.
I am a fiscal conservative. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But in politics those kinds of things aren't issues anymore. sigh.

If you notice street signs made for TV are all caps because like the Readers Digest we need a senior version:D
Actually signs here are a combination of both All Caps and/or a combination of cap and low case such as San Marino.

Actually, upper and lower case is easier to read. My question is why doesn't The Villages post signs on the roads (especially at roundabouts) to show whether you're going north or south? This would be very helpful for all the new villagers and snowbirds. They don't have re-do signs, but just add a little sign below it saying "N" or "North" and "S" or "South".

Potential buyers won't be able to find the house you're selling...if the street name is in all caps.

BUT, in the big scheme of things and since the signs in TV have been the way they are for a long time (surely within the law, since the Developer never does anything wrong ;))...it's not worth it to me to keep beating a dead horse. :p
