I didn't think this was a patch on the 1960 original. Denzil Washington is a very good actor and I love lots of the movies he has been in, but I felt he didn't shine and didn't bring the charisma to the role that Yul Brynner did.
The remake of the original classic follows a similar story line: 7 men (hired guns, bounty hunters and gamblers) employed to protect people in a town against over-riding odds. The action builds with guns blazing right, left and centre, but as remakes go, it was mediocre rather than magnificent.

A friend from Indiana called yesterday and the conversation slipped over to recent movies. They just saw Magnificent Seven and gave a strong recommendation. They do love westerns so....... that could have a lot to do with it. We like westerns too and wish more new ones were filmed.

I've seen them both. The original cast far outshone the 2016 version.

That's true. Some of the 1960 actors were top drawers for box office take.

Chris Pratt and Denzel Washington are good but they could have got some more top stars as well. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Tom Cruise, etc. would have more fit the bill. Real expensive for salary and cuts for the top stars.
