Cake Mixes & Toxins

Subject : Cake Mixes & Toxins

A student at HBHS (high school) had pancakes this week and it almost became fatal.
His Mom (registered nurse) made him pancakes, dropped him off at school and headed to play tennis.

She never takes her cell phone on the court but did this time and her
son called to say he was having trouble breathing.
She told him to go to the nurse immediately and proceeded to call
school and alert the nurse.

The nurse called the paramedics and they were there in 3 minutes and
worked on the boy all the way to the hospital. He came so close to dying.
Evidently this is more common then I ever knew.

Check the expiration dates on packages like pancakes and cake mixes
that have yeast which over time develop spores. Apparently, the mold
that forms in old mixes can be toxic!

Throw away ALL OUTDATED pancake
mix, Bisquick, brownie mixes etc you have in your home.

Thank you very much for the info and the website. I do not live far from where this happened. It is very true about yeast growing mold. I'm going to check my cake mixes etc. Thanks again! :)

However, if you read the Snopes report, it does say there is no issue UNLESS you are allergic to mold. So, it is one of those true stories but not quite as serious as it originally sounds. If you're allergic to any mold (think penicillin), be aware or the risk. If you have no allergies, dump it if it tastes funny, otherwise you can use it.

My box of pancake mix suggest putting it in refrigerator, so I put it in a Plastic container that I can seal the top on. I keep it in my other refrigerator in laundry room. I also do same thing with almonds, pecans, walnuts, rice. It is especially good for our hot southern summers here. My rice also states to refrigerate after opening. I keep my whole wheat flower in the freezer and just take it out when I need to use it.
