View Full Version : Dog Park Poll

Thanks for all your help in my plea for a vote for the dog park issue. I wasn't aware I could create a "poll". I hope I'm doing this right.
The question is: Do you want a minimum of three community dog parks in TV? Two more parks would be constructed in like to Paradise Dog Park. One would be located in Marion County and one in Sumter County.
Still not sure how I feel about dog parks. I tend to side with Ceasar on this issue. I love the dogs, but many times the owners border on neurotic. It's not easy to allow the dogs to get to know each other, the way that dogs would in real life. The slightest snap, or gruff between two dogs, and the owners go ballistic, swoop up their precious little angels, and usually go into a rant, upsetting not just the immediate two in the encounter, but the entire population. So......, if it costs one dime, then no. Not interested.

Yes from a two dog household. Two dog parks on site would be great.

Thanks for your question. At this point there have been no discussions regarding cost to use the dog parks. There is no fee to use Paradise and it seems reasonable that there will be no fee for additional parks in Marion and Sumter County.

Maybe we could set-up some kind of a reservations system, that could be accessed from the Internet. Owners could see what dogs will be there at what time. They will be able to meet there favorite friends (both owners and dogs). This could be possible at a low price of maybe $8 per month - maybe combined with the golf tee time system at a reduced rate.

John, if a dog snaps or bites, in my experience it is a warning that the dog hasn't been socialized and doesn't want to play with other dogs.
At Doggie Doo Run Run, aggressive dogs that cause fights are banned. In twelve months at DDRR, I have only seen one aggressive dog. I assume most dog owners know very well if their dog is socialized and enjoys playing with other dogs.
Most dogs at DDRR play together without any problems. Sometimes there are 30 or more dogs there at one time. There are two separate areas at DDRR and at Paradise Park. One for dogs under 30 lbs and large dogs aren't allowed there. And one for dogs over 30 lbs. My 10 lb dog prefers to play with large dogs in "over 30 lb area" and that is allowed.
There is chasing and play growling and wrestling. All part of normal dog play. Very different from a dog that snaps or bites.

Hi 784 Caroline,
Unfortunately I cannot give you specifics on what such a facility looks like. I do know it involves a covered, protected area with a hard flooring. You may want to call Sharon Starke: 259-8021. Sharon is the President of Dynamic Dog Club of The Villages and is proposing such a facility.

I would love a dog park in Sumter near 466A
We go to the Lady Lake Dog Park on the corner of Rolling Acres and 466
and live in the Village of Hadley. We love the Lady Lake Park however
With 2 Dogs it's a long way to go on a golf cart

Hello Barefoot. I have a question for you. I have a beautiful German Shephard who has not been socialized due to the fact ....that we do not have any dog runs in my neighborhood up here in Michigan.
We have bought a home in Duval...and will be moving down to TV in July. How do I go about get her socialized. She is a great dog and very nice around humans. However, I don't know if I can trust her around other dogs. Need some advice....Thanks Bob

I'll tell you from personal experience. The youngest schnauzer didn't do well. He was in all the big dogs faces not understanding how to be social and stop acting like a puppy. This frustrated me so much that I put him on a leash, kinda opposite of what was supposed to happen. So that's the last time he's going to DDRR. I could use some advice about how to socialize him.

Oh that adorable Sammy! How can you get upset with a face like his?????
I have the same problem Kath. My 2 dogs want nothing to do with the others in the dog park. I see the others playing and having a grand ol time and my two are totally unsocial.
Are there any dog socialization experts out there that have some advice? I cant even get my 2 to move unless I walk with them!

Actually John, it is a two sided problem.......not only the owner with the dog who is being "attacked" but what about the owner of the dog who is doing the attacking. My recent experience at the dog park on CR103 was several dogs came after my 6 month old and scared him.......now he is very skittish when approached by any dog that is in the least aggressive.......both parties need to take responsibility. Hey Bob, congratulations on your new home in Duval.
Dogs need to be socialized gradually. I always start my dogs off in Obedience classes when they are young. This gets them used to being around other animals. I also have a lot of friends with dogs, so they are around dogs a lot when they're growing up.
When you are walking your dog in your neighbourhood in Michigan, is she friendly with other dogs? Wagging tails and sniffing each other? If so, she probably would be fine at the dog park.
Actually dogs are usually more aggressive when they're on a leash because they feel trapped. That is why leashes are prohibited within the DDRR dog park.
If your dog is growling and lunging at other dogs when she is on a leash, she needs socialization. I have some ideas for you to try if this is the case. Just let me know what kind of behavior she exhibits when she sees other dogs. I watch a lot of dog training programs on TV. "End of the Leash" is one I watch, "Me or the Dog" is another. The Dog Whisperer is excellent. I'm attending a one day seminar tomorrow on dog training .. it is one of my favourite things.
Nonie, you don't have a problem with Clara and Georgie not being socialized! They behave very well around other animals. Your dogs simply prefer humans to dogs. You might trying rewarding them with a small treat every 10 minutes when you're at DDRR, thereby creating pleasant associations for them.
Think of it like this. You don't care if you ever learn to play mahjongg. I am bored silly by sewing. And your dogs don't care if they ever play with other dogs. Just personal preference.

Me too Jeanne, I think the next house will definitely be one with a fence. They love to romp around with each other but with strange dogs they just misbehave.

Dogs should be leashed until they enter the actual DDRR fenced park. Then, no leashes. I'm pretty sure there is a sign. The theory being that leashed dogs are more aggressive. Other dogs will come bounding up to a leashed dog and he will feel threatened because he can't get away. So instead he will show aggression. And that sets a negative pattern.
I've rarely seen dogs fight at the Dog Park but there is lots of play growling and wrestling and chasing. Luckily owners can choose to segregate the large dogs from the small dogs. But in the back five acres they all mix and get along.
It is a fun place, very clean and well run. I go there every day when I'm in Florida.

....at Doggie Doo Run Run about no leashes within the dog park. The rule sign does mention that dogs are to be leashed when entering and exiting the dog park.
Many people who are regulars at the DDRR though will go up to newbies who leash their dogs the first couple of times they are at DDRR. Barefoot is right that the leashed dogs often feel trapped and can get aggressive. They are also much more prone to be protective of their owners. Dogs being protective of their owners has been a major problem with the behavior of some individual dogs at DDRR. This is their behavior with other dogs and even people.
There are a lot of responsible dog owners at DDRR who look out for one another.

:agree: We definitely do need more Dog parks to accomodate so many dogs that are in The Villages and more moving in all the time.
Just hoping that grass is planted in them to keep the dirt, dust and sometimes mud levels down.:yuck: It makes a huge difference.

As a resident of The Bonita Villages area we need a dog park in the southern part of The Villages. A number of us used to get our dogs together and now there are houses in "our fields". The 2 footed and 4 footed members of the community need a large place for the interactions, socializations, etc. The owners must take the responsibility for their animals.

Dear Tal and Bare...
We have been in TV for 2 1/2 days and Finley has has the time of his life at DDRR twice already. Thanks to both of you (and GMoney who is not on this thread) for all your recommendations on DDRR.
PC - we also live in Bonita and it is a bit of a ride but well worth it.
DDRR is clean, well run and the best dog park we have been to. We met wonderful people and doggies on bith days.
We also began to socialize Finley when he was very young - after he had all his initial shots. He was a bit of a whimpery baby and our vet thought this would be an issue as he got older. We made sure it didn't and he loves to play with doggies of all sizes. He loves cats too - but they don't always return the favor.
Kate
PS _ I would like a dog park further south, but it will be hard to compare with DDRR.

Kate, I'm so pleased that you and Findlay are enjoying Doggie Doo Run Run. Have you found the hanging swings in the back lot? (Three times around the back lot is a mile, just in case you're wondering!)
We have a dog park here in Canada but it pales in comparison to DDRR. I love that place! Biggins, Lolli Pup and myself can hardly wait to get back to The Bubble and the Dog Park!

of more dog parks since that will be a good place for people to take their dogs instead of the town squares. This is also being addressed in another thread. I love animals and they need their own place to be with other dogs and not lots of people, traffic and noise. My dog is too old to enjoy the company of other dogs or we would go to a park in a heartbeat.

Dilly, perhaps you should give it a try .. you might be surprised.
My big dog, twelve years old, (who recently had to be euthanized) really enjoyed the dog park. He didn't play much with other dogs, he had operations on both his back knees. But he really got excited and brightened up when we went to DDRR.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it just doesn't work for him. Our neighbors have dogs and we have tried to socialize him with them, but he wants no part of it. He's just about to turn 17 and is pretty much blind and deaf. He used to really enjoy people and other animals but not anymore. He is not in pain yet, but when he gets to that point, we will have him put down. Right now, he just enjoys his naps next to my husband and/or the cat or the safety of his crate. From what I know of DDRR it would be the ideal place for us were things different.

"Doggie Doo Run Run. Private Dog Park - Day care. Four fenced, all grass areas. 1.5 acre for small dogs, 2.5 for large/general population, 1 acre w/agility equipment and 3 acres "out back" (still fenced) for the real runners/wanders or just some quiet time with their owner. Covered seating, coffee/tea for owners, water and wading pools and lots of toys. Not many shade trees. Always staffed and THEY clean up the poop! Just leave a flag marker, and walk away. Fee is $3 a day or $20 a month. Staff and Owner are awesome and dog lovers and it shows. They also offer day care and "non-kennel" boarding. Location: 12971 CR101 at CR104. Directions: This is just outside of The Villages and Lady Lake, one mile east of CR301. Easiest access is to go one mile north on CR101 from CR466. On east (right) at intersection with CR104. I also pay $25 per month for one dog per month or $3 per day. It is well worth the price.
The two Villages dog parks (Mulberry and Paradise Lake) are free for residents of the Villages with i.d.s but you have to clean up after the dogs.
I believe Lady Lake Dog Park is $40 per year but it is only open from 9 to 12 noon.
