These bicycles seem to be getting popular among middle aged and older folks. I first noticed them in China about 10 years ago. Why are e-bikes all the rage? Because they're plenty of fun to ride - LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-e-bikes-20160715-snap-story.html)

Several years ago my son ordered a kit and made his own e-bike. He loved it! I rode it a few times and it is a great ride!

I have seen two. The best source for e-bikes (by price) is Crazy Lenny's bikes out of Madison WI. He ships, he is the number one dealer in the country. I have a Sondor myself. The #1 by number e bike. The low price made Sonder #1. The wife loves hers, which was quite a bit more expensive.

My husband had one in high school in the '60s. He loved it.

Funny, I know Crazy Lenny (used to live near Madison). He (well, the guy at their store) calls the die hard e-bike riders "Team DUI" as I guess people who have their licenses taken often get the e-bikes.
I have ridden a few (and bikes with 80cc two stroke engines)...I will stick to pedaling my own for the time being. But they are fun.

Mrs. Bear and I each have a Pedego. Well built bikes aith strong frames.disc brakes and excellent range. You can pedal, use electro assist pedaling or go purely electric. These are perfect for TV. Love them and can highly recommend them.

Has anyone any knowledge/experience modifying a standard bike to an e-bike or attaching a small engine?

Yes. It is not difficult and you can buy several different kits to fit what you are looking for. My son did his bicycle when he was 14... Peace out...

Over a year ago, there was a firm that did demos of Ebikes at the Waterfront Hotel in the Villages, we rode them and liked them but did not buy at that time. Not sure of the company, but they seemed to be very well built, they were comfy to ride and had good controls, pedal a bit, ebike assist a bit. Really nice. However, on a bike you must follow all the rules of a car on a public street, no cutting corners, so to speak. Good luck. bbbbbb :a040:
