I've got a Courtyard Villa, and put a PetSafe door insert on the sliding glass door area opening to the side courtyard area. Decided against going into the lanai, because I'd still need to set up a door leading out to the yard.

If you are looking for the dog only to have access into the lania, the PetSafe insert will work. I must say it was not as easy a set-up (at least for me) as I hoped for, and was accomplished with much profanity and bad temper. But, it does work well.

We purchased a pet door at PETCO, however it was for our cats so they could have easy access to the lanai. We ended up returning it since it traumatized our one cat! Actually, he would prefer we get up and open the lanai door for him! The door however was excellent quality.

How did it traumatize the cat?

It must have made it [groan] cat-atonic...
What a [groan] cat-astrophe that must have been...

My recommendation is to BE CAREFUL. Many years ago Mr. Judy made a kitty door for a window so Francis (our cat at the time) could come and go as he pleased. I noticed that he started eating a lot more food than before, and he was shedding like crazy. There was cat hair all over the house. Well, I came downstairs into the kitchen one morning and there were cats everywhere! They were on the stove. On the table. On the counter. They skedaddled out the cat door when they saw me. I think there were 8 - 10 extra cats in our kitchen! It seems that Francis was bringing his pals home to party every night after we went to bed. We put a lock on the cat door after that. Just make sure only your doggie can use the door.

Get one with a pliable plastic door. The solid plastic doors will catch tails and cause much distress to the animal with its tail caught in there

GG, your new picture fits perfectly with that cute comment....
Back to topic, I've had doggie doors all over my house, sometimes in the slider doors and other times in the wall. They are the best, it takes about 5 min to train the dogs I've had to use them. The plastic covers have a magnetic strip on the bottom so it would keep any small critters out. If I had bought a CYV like I originally intended, I would have put one in that had access to the outside yard. When I leave the house, I put the cover in it so that the brats aren't outside barking at everyone. Its the best invention ever made, well, almost. I usually buy them at Petsmart.
Good luck tankdvr, hope you find the home of your dreams!!

Cassie,
We kept putting Ben through the opening. It got to the point he would avoid the door altogether. He loves going out on the lanai and I did not want him to associate going out on the lanai and being scared. I later read in a TOTV post that we should have taped open the opening. We lost patience, plus we wanted to get our money back in guess it was never used. Amazingly my old cat Ivan went through the opening with no problems!

We got a Pet Safe plastic door with a magnet on the flap to keep it down so bugs don't get into the lanai, We put it through the screen just next to the wall of the house. Our dog loves it.
