View Full Version : why respond at all?

I've been reading the posts this morning and on 3 occasions there were replies that seemed to criticize the subject. one was it was an infomercial and in another it was comparing posts to a restaurant and then topping each other.
I have to ask, "why reply at all?" if the topic doesn't interest you, don't read it. I actually was interested in both topics and the opinions expressed.
I have seen other posters ask questions and then there are numerous replies but no one has answered the question.
Not every topic interests me, so if it doesn't, I don't read the post. Why do some people feel they must comment in such a way on something others might find beneficial but they do not???

Freedom of Speech?
Born in New York and feel superior about knowledge of good food and restaurants?
Difficulty with impulse control?
Mad about the world situation and just venting?

NY state or NY City? Big cultural difference between NYC and west and north of Albany....

I wholeheartedly agree about people slamming others for introducing a topic. As for giving an opinion, everyone's entitled. But I don't see the point in dissing someone's topic.

We are all different and I accept other posters comments. Keep in mind that much is lost in the written word, and that we have no idea in many cases who the poster is ( personality, etc) Its why many of us use emoji's

I agree with Bonnevie. The atmosphere on TOTV has changed since I started on this site back in 2008 (I think). I know of several people who read TOTV but won't dare to post because of the animosity. Times change and I get that but no excuse for the rudeness. (Well, I'm ready, let it rip.)

Let's continue to remember those who respond as they do are in the very small minority.
They get way more press than they deserve.
The other 98.796732 % of us just ignore it (most of the time...).

Just yesterday someone asked where is a good place to see a Packers game. Of course one knucklehead said Green Bay, then came back later that they would rather read a book in Braille than watch a football game. This poster had only joined in October, less than a month ago and had about a 100 or more posts and here was a newer poster trying to ask a legitimate question.
I finally had to make a post, I answered the OP question with either Gators Dockside at SS or Brownwood, and second I commented that the poster who was being a jerk wasn't really impressing anybody since you're hiding behind a computer with no photo in your avatar. This morning I checked and his posts and my post had been deleted by the Mods. Mission accomplished and somebody else even posted about the two Gators Docksides since my post was deleted.

I come on here for information, and find that others have been helpful to me about my queries. Only saying MCO rather than Orlando seemed to rankle one person. One out of many isn't a bad average. Why can't we all get along? We do in person at the town squares, restaurants and stores. Well, except maybe when chair-saving is involved. I feel welcome after being in The Villages for only 2 years.

:boom: My immediate reaction, exactly. I do not think adults should correct other adults for writing an opinion. Just my own arrogant opinion. It is still America, Free Speech as another poster wrote.

Free speech IMHO does not entitle one to belittle others and be a condescending jerk.

I don't believe I was correcting people. I was simply expressing my wonderment as to why someone would bother doing it.
I think the replies to this shows it all. Some people are kind and considerate and helpful, while others just can't stop themselves from being contrary.
Yes, free speech and all that. But we do teach our children to be polite. Is it too much to expect it of adults?

I remember when I first joined and there was a lot of friendly kidding around and a lot of helpful replies. Some of us have made close friends. Otherwise, known as the clique.
The forum has changed a lot and I think one of the major reasons is a lot of people don't take the time to express themselves fully or think they are more funny than they really are.
Some people don't feel a need to be friendly are are contrary people, who like playing devil's advocate.
Some people are irreverent or feel a need to be sarcastic.
Some people like to pi** on your leg and tell you it's raining outside.
Even though it's freedom of speech, some would say it's best to be quiet to thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. OH WELL!!!!

Well said, but I would like to add one. Some people are just mean.

I remember when I first joined and was attacked almost immediately by said "clique."
Obviously some people feel more secure in a gang and if you happen to have a different opinion on things...just be ready for the attempted dog-pile. :D
In the short time I've been here, it's been very interesting to see the number of folks who have been members for 5+ years, don't have that many posts even now...but have commented that they too were attacked and is the reason they don't post much.

Good post! I totally like your attitude, & especially your signature. It's quite odd that some people who have posted here the idea that they don't like slamming someone else's topic or dissing another poster...yet I have read posts where they have done exactly what they claim they don't agree with. Just saying!

Definitely very "cliquey" here. Reminds me of middle school at times.
