This used to be a fun wet site to come to learn about new things, restaurants, places to see...ask for suggestions, etc., etc., etc.

Now it seems it's only a Craigs List of TV

Disappointing.

After you hide the classifieds after going into new posts - then pressing "hide classifieds" again (instead of new posts) refreshes the new posts and brings them up to date, and keeps the classifieds off. You have to go back out of the post you were reading to the screen that has the "hide classifieds" button.

If you don't refresh for a while, not sure how long, then you do have to wait the 30 secs.

Simple Solution - download Firefox...

go to "ad on's" and search for "ABP" and install...

No more ad's or classified pop up/over/unders....

:ho: I agree. The site is replacing the old " Classifieds " section in the newspapers. It was at one time much more interesting. Now how do I go about listing my used size 42 men's briefs with minor stains for sale at a $ 1.50 apiece ??? Let's see ------

I definitely don't consider having to go to a new browser, which will then require add-ons, to be a "simple solution" to using any one website.

FAR more secure than IE and a galaxy more secure than Chrome. Edge...well, does not work with anything.

Then there is "Tor"....Edward Snowden approved and my primary window to the web.

Folks who are on Chrome are being tracked by Google - every keystroke (and your information then sold...and Google has no issue admitting it).

Nope. Already have Firefox with ABP and it works well for popups, etc., but has no effect on whether the Classified ads show up or not. This is a system problem on TOTV that appeared with the security update a month ago.

I wasn't arguing pros and cons of browsers. That's very much a personal preference thing. (However, if anybody assumes they're not being tracked using any browser, they're deluding themselves imho.)

I was just stating my opinion that changing browsers just to run ToTV is not a "simple solution"...especially considering all the recent technical issues with ToTV and the uncertainty of the source(s) of those problems.

You're missing the problem. It is not popup ads, it's the presence of classified ad threads posted by members within TOTV that show up when a member clicks on New Posts. Ads can outnumber the other threads so members have to scroll through many threads in order to see ones that interest them. There is a button at the top of the screen that says Hide Classifieds which should hide these ads during a visit, but only does so until you return to the main screen from reading a post. Then you have to click it again to hide the ads. Prior to the security update that screwed up many things, the button worked properly.

I'm surprised no one mentions the political posts, they are more annoying than the classifieds, however hitting the 'hide classifieds' button does remove the politicals also. However, everyone is right, you must hit it again after reading a thread. Another annoying problem is after reading a thread, you can't just hit the 'back' button, I sometimes have as many as a dozen pages to go back through, so I hit my 'back/history' and then find the main page. This site has been such a bother that I spend very little time here anymore.

I used Firefox from 2005 until 2015, and then switched to Google Chrome. I found it much faster, easier to operate, and it stores your info. When my laptop crashed a year ago, all of my bookmarks came back on my new computer as soon as I signed into Chrome. Otherwise I had weeks of work to try and find all those bookmarks.

YUP!!! I don't know that many folks have re-sold items before. IF they aren't new from the store...in reality they should be about 15 to 20% of what the original cost was and in some instances 10%. I was told that by someone who was an auctioneer and also had a re-sale business.

Bingo! And that is why medical professionals, anyone who needs to abide by SOx or PCI should never ever use Chrome (or anyone who is concerned about privacy).

At most facilities I have worked with - Chrome is seen as a "virus" and or "Spyware" and its executable not allowed to run (stopped at the edge device).

If you use Edge's InPrivate mode to cover your online tracks, you might want to think about changing your web browser. Edge has already got some stick for its lack of extension support -- "it's coming, it's coming!" Yeah, whatever... so's Christmas -- but now it turns out that InPrivate mode is a privacy nightmare. It is possible to peak behind the curtain and see which sites have been visited when using a browsing mode that should mask this.

There are similar features found in other browser. Chrome has Incognito mode, Safari has Private Browsing, Firefox has... actually, Firefox has Private Browsing too. Whatever the name, what these browsing modes all have in common is that once the browser is closed, there is no record of which sites have been visited. That's not to say that ISPs and law enforcement agencies wouldn’t be able to determine the browsing history, but from a local point of view it is as though no browsing has taken place.

But Edge is different.

Somewhat counterintuitively, Edge actually records browsing history in InPrivate mode. More than this, by examining the WebCache file it is a relatively simple task for someone to reconstruct full browsing history, regardless of whether surfing was performed in regular or InPrivate mode. These were the finding of infosec expert Brent Muir.

Over on Forensic Focus, researcher Ashish Singh warns:

The forensic examination of most web browsers has proven that they don't have a provision for storing the details of privately browsed web sessions. Private browsing is provided for a purpose, i.e. privately browsing the web, which is being delivered.

However, in the case of Microsoft Edge even the private browsing isn't as private as it seems. Previous investigations of the browser have resulted in revealing that websites visited in private mode are also stored in the browser’s WebCache file.

With Tor - NO ONE knows (or can find out unless they are NSA). It is based on the Firefox platform

I have looked in user CP, my profile and the political forum itself and cannot find how I can unsubscribe. I don't even remember subscribing in the first place, must of been years ago. I wish someone had send out this info weeks ago, the political threads have been keeping me away this this board.

This morning I attempted to make this post twice to ask this question, and both times my computer froze up on this website and I got the message that the site was not responding, did I want to wait or kill it. Both times was when I got to the reply to thread page. Also, I noticed there were 7 posts after my last post yesterday, but yet this thread did not show up under new posts, I found it by going to my profile and then clicking on my older posts.

Thanks a lot, I got it. Now that makes the board a little more bearable. I don't see the need to even go on that forum unless you just like to either argue or boast, and without the screen names why bother.

Now the freezing problem is still there. While writing this reply my screen froze for 3 minutes until the sign appeared that the site is not responding, wait or kill. I hit kill and then I hit retry and I finally got back to this page and its working again.

Before I could hit submit reply, my screen froze two more times, the second time it asked if I wanted to send feedback to Chrome, which I did.

Last night I deselected the political forum from my user CP and the political threads went away. Today when I hit todays posts, the threads written by 'guest' are back, I just checked my user CP and I'm not subscribed to the political forum. Something is not right. Also when I click on a thread to read and want to go back, there is somewhere between 6 to 10 pages I have to go back through to get to the main page. Something ain't right.

The "hide classified" button hasn't worked for a month. So many ads, so very annoying, especially when people are selling things for $10 or $12. I really wish a price limit of $25 would apply. Under $25, please just donate it to charity.

At least for now, "New Posts" seems to not include the political forum. But "Today's Posts" has always for me. Yes...very annoying.

When you're not a member of the political forum, I think the posts shouldn't appear anywhere I go...unless I choose to go to the political forum itself or join the group.

That's the trick that works for me. Never click Today's Posts. That will bring up political threads. I always hit New Posts which will bring up every post made since your last logon. You can hit New Posts again to see what has been posted since you logged on. But if you're looking for a post you saw on a prior visit that day, you have to hit Today's Posts which, unfortunately brings up the political. Hope they get this solved soon.
