To answer your question, we had two friends who used PODS and another equivalent company. They were very satisfied. We cannot do the lifting,,,the heavy work.
Is a back disorder or misalignment the way to go at great pain and expense.?????? Retired? Take car of your body!!!!!

We used a good guy, Iceman Movers, he is in Tavares, he is great, he will also take your car INSIDE his van space permitting, he moved our car, wonderful. Bruce Ice.

But I probably should have been more specific.

This would be to take a relatively small amount of things between houses, several states apart. It is one of those too much stuff for the car trunk and too much stuff to mail situations.

Neighbor's used Pods, and I do not recall them having any complaints, except the equipment they used to load and unload the pod into their driveway left significant tire marks that they had to have power washed to get off. Their driveway is still concrete, so no idea if the same thing would happen on a decorated driveway.

I used an U-Haul POD I loaded it at a local U-Haul place in Long Island NY. It was delivered to the U-Haul site in Leesburg.. I used the Village Movers to unload and deliver to my house. They charged me $150 which was much cheaper than having the pod delivered to my house. Everything went smoothly with both U-Haul and Village Movers.

The U-Haul is cheaper for sure but it is particle board covered with a tarp so it depends on what your shipping and how long your possessions will be stored in the unit. I have used PODS twenty times and they were flawless and totally professional from start to finish. On the move from N.J. to The Villages I used Pack Rat, it's the company you may see that shows a unit at Lowes...to keep it short, a extremely poor and disappointing experience. Make sure you talk about wooden blocks being placed under the unit when they deliver it so your driveway way doesn't get damaged. Good luck.

I used ABF .They are an interesting company that have moved into the moving business . They have several different modes . The modular mode, (Pod Type) ride inside a regular freight trailer,rather than bouncing along on a flat bed trailer with straps. The other is to rent the trailer space you actually need and pay by the foot/cube. Also easy to arrange a load/unload service. I had a great experience with these folks,worth a look.

I think I need to get over myself and just plan to do a lot of mailing and schlepping in the trunk.

Unfortunately PACK-RAT no longer goes to NJ-> FL. Their NJ center closed. I have a reservation with U-Pack for JAN. They are 1/2 the price of PODS so hopefully they aren't 1/2 as good! :D

The above link will give you pertinent info on PODS. We used one POD in our move from the Boston Ma area to The Villages. At that time I believe they only offered the 16 foot length for long distance moves. Now looks like they offer a 7 foot also. From the OP dialogue, terms like several trunk loads and use of mail, it would seem that a POD would be overkill.

Our experience was great. We sold much of the big stuff. Collected moving boxes, packed them ourselves , moved them to the garage. As we closed in on moving day, we had POD delivered and leisurely loaded as we had 30 days to load. House gradually emptied down to bare essentials which we loaded on last day.

POD delivered as scheduled and we unloaded at our pace. Since essentials were loaded last, they came out first . Even with our plan, we still brought too much.

We used 2 ABF "Pods" in our move to The Villages 3 years ago. We were very pleased with the service. We packed the pods slowly over the course of 2 weeks (you decide when to have them picked up. They arrived at our Villa on the day promised. Not 1 item was damaged. Highly recommend!

I think you are probably right, mtdjed. (quoted above) -- I have been thinking the same thing. A POD sounds like overkill. I will look into the smaller size though, hoping it is small enough.

We will be making our decision soon as to whether to sell our TV house. If we do, we will sell it turnkey, but will be moving just a few things we want to keep. If we go to market, I would like for the stuff we are keeping to be out of the house before we list. A POD could be a convenience, but I agree that it is probably overkill.

Since the last post, I got a quote from PODS on the smallest size, and I now know that mtdjed's suggestion (posted here) was absolutely right. Even the smallest one is not small enough.

So now, I have another question. Which way to ship is the least expensive if you are not concerned about getting it there fast? UPS or FedEx or the post office?

When you move to TV you will find you have LOTS of friends from the north who wish to visit. You might leave random boxes with them so they can pack their autos and deliver your goods as they come to check out your new digs.

It took us two packed trips to get all down for our 'turnkey' purchased courtyard villa.

If you decide to use this method, remember to pack in the smallest boxes available so they fit in the auto's back seat and trunk area.

We recently used POD for our move from CT to TV. We found the company very professional and friendly and very prompt with the delivery. I think they only have 2 sizes of PODS so if you have a very small amount I am not sure if that would be the most economical choice. Check out U-Haul too. They have several sizes to choose from that you hitch to your car. We have had good luck with both companies. The POD company we used from CT is headquartered in Ocala so they were very familiar with TV.

We used PODs, one large and one small.... We used local movers to load / unload the PODs... The PODs company has a list of recommended movers who will load / unload.. found this to be less expensive then the old style moving company...
