View Full Version : Media bias or controll hit in humor?

At the WH Correspondent Dinner comedian Wanda Sykes said (among a lot of other shots):

"It's funny to me that [photographers] have never caught you smoking," Sykes told the president, "but they always catch you with your shirt off. I know you're into this transparency thing, but I don't need to see your nipples."

Have you heard the old expression; many a true word is said in jest?

Now just why is it we have never seen a photo of Obama smoking?
For the same reason we never saw Bush smoking a cigar, which he enjoyed on occasion and not as frequent as a cigarette smoker......it was not allowed!!!!
And some how it magically doesn't happen.

Bias or control? Either way it ain't right...it is a form of deception...as harmless as it may be. Makes one wonder what else is "managed" (all parties and past and incumbents).

Perhaps he never smokes where the press is.

Yeah, but more importantly, does he inhale?

Wanda Sykes, now that is one smart-mouth woman. I roll around on the floor laughing when she starts in. And her delivery is priceless.

I AM DISGUSTED BY WANDA SYKES.

At lunch today when I stopped by my computer, I saw this thread about Wanda Sykes. And I gave Wanda Sykes a compliment which you see here above where I quoted myself. I have only seen her a few times on television and she was funny I thought. But I will not bother to watch her again.

When I posted the above comment at lunch time, I did not know the whole story. I thought from what BTK said here she was just joking about what the photographers catch and don't catch. And I had seen her do a lot of funny stuff before.

And then a few hours passed.........

And just now I returned to this computer. And before I checked in here, I took a look at MSN where I read about what else Wanda Sykes said at the White House correspondents' dinner.

And now that I have all the information, I want to clearly say that I think that Wanda Sykes absolutely went too far.

I am not usually at a loss for words, but I cannot begin to come up with anything to truly describe how completely wrong I find it to be that Wanda Sykes made 9/11 into a joke. In doing so Wanda Sykes was offensive, disrespectful, and downright stupid.

And even though I am not a Limbaugh fan. Not even close. And even though Limbaugh is fair game and he knows it and thrives on any attention, Wanda Sykes went too far when she said she hoped his kidneys fail. That is not only tasteless. That is nothing more than an ignorant comment that just sounds angry and stupid. There are so many clever ways she could have joked about Limbaugh. Roasting somebody is one thing. Saying you hope somebody's kidneys fail is something else. Weird.

So anyway, I responded, first time, too soon, in this thread. I have not had the television on at all today and it was not until just now that I got the whole story on Wanda Sykes mouth at the dinner.

What's she doing for her next show? Those Helen Keller jokes that I hate so much. Wanda Sykes has lost her touch. Wanda Sykes has no class. And Wanda Sykes' mouth is no longer smart like I said this morning when I did not know......the rest of the story.

9/11 should never be comic fodder.

(Annnnnnnnd another thing -- do not even think about coming after me trying to do one of those "Free Speech" routines that get so twisted up around here sometimes. This has nothing to do with free speech. Wanda Sykes is free to continue to make an ass (arse) of herself all she wants. But the woman has lost it! And she will not be invited back is my guess. Even if she did go after Limbaugh. She did it with no class whatsoever. --- and NO! I am not the woman who has lost it. Wanda Sykes has lost it! And her stupidity caused me to take up for Rush Limbaugh!!!! Geez! What planet am I on?)

Uuhhh, Hey, Boomer, tell 'em how ya really feel.

These events are pretty brutal each year, but will agree that this went a bit over the top.....see below from the Canadian Press....Obama is getting more press because he thought it was funny !
________

"Obama laughed at the joke, took a sip of water and continued to chuckle.

Bad move, said Canadian David Frum, a prominent conservative pundit and one of Limbaugh's harshest critics.

"The central part of the story is not the comedian but the president," Frum said Monday.

"One of the things I would have imagined, as an experienced TV performer like Barack Obama would know, is that you don't have to laugh at every joke. You know there's going to be a reaction shot ... if he had sat there and not laughed, not smiled at that, the story would be about her, not him.""

Bucco,

I just added to my post above. I am furious on so many levels.

And I must say that I think it would have been really classy for the President to sit there absolutely stone-faced. Really. That would have shown real class.

That might have been a nervous laugh. We have all seen those before.

But I am not defending that laugh in the least. Stone-faced would have been the right thing to do. Knowing it's a photo op is beside the point.

I am not cutting Obama slack. No slack for Wanda Sykes. No slack for Obama. And AAAAAAAUUUUUUGHHHHHHH!!! WHAT AM I DOING CUTTING RUSH LIMBAUGH SLACK???!!! (Hey, I know the answer to that. This is a right and wrong issue. It's the issue. Not the players. Right and wrong.)

And I am spitting nails still. And there are enough nails to go around.

Boomer (The really fair--though not so balanced right now--woman)

Good Luck finding the MSM (Main Stream Media) mentioning this much if at all....while you will find pretty much coverage of the golf commentator on Nancy Pelosi.

Bucco,

This David Frum you mention here -- I just looked him up and skimmed through a few things. I have not read much, but so far, I think I rather like this guy. I picked up on an article he wrote in March about Limbaugh. He's got Rush Limbaugh pegged. I think Rush Limbaugh is a self-serving buffoon whose only real commitment is to Rush Limbaugh. David Frum seems to think that Rush Limbaugh may just be the Democrats' best friend ever.

Comedians get to and should take hits on Rush Limbaugh and any of the rest, either side. That goes with the territory. But 9/11 and kidney failure are completely off limits for jokes, in my book. I cannot imagine anyone joking about Pearl Harbor. And wishing somebody dead is not good joke writing. Venom spews in both directions I know.

Anyway, Bucco, thanks for pointing out David Frum to me. I will read more. I had not heard of him. Rush Limbaugh and the rest like him have been drowning out the others for me. And so I had stopped listening.

the media will begin to wear thin.
He is vulnerable in so many ways that just never get surfaced...but as the saying goes you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. At events like that dinner he clearly displays he is out of his element or the antithesis not in the element of a real POTUS!!

I watched the whole dinner, and thought Obama showed great style and had great writers.

Even as a commie-pinko, I felt that Sykes' comment about Rush was tasteless and inappropriate. As far as laughter goes, that's the power of a good comedian. They get you laughing, take you where you THINK they're going, and there you are laughing at something that is out of bounds, but it's too late.

I even thought the President's comment about Cheney's memoirs was not appropriate. (How to Shoot Friends and Torture People) The torture part, regardless of the humor involved is unbecoming a President, just as Cheney's running his mouth about expecting a new terrorist attack now that HE is no longer in office is out of bounds too.

The sniping-from both sides- is out of bounds now that Bush-Cheney are out of office. Let an independent investigator sort through the facts- ALL the facts, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi's knowledge of anything.

One great line by Sykes asked "Mr. President why are you and Joe Biden going out together for hamburgers? Don't you know that having the two of you toether in a restaurant could be dangerous? Who planned that- Nancy Pelosi (She's 3rd in line) and she was a Hillary supporter! (Hillary's 4th in line)

Subtle but brilliant!
