We are (finally) moving to the Villages for the first time this January, and are looking for opinions on the best route to take from Buffalo. Google maps has us going through West Virginia and South Carolina (90/79/77/19/64/77/26/95/295/10/301!) while Apple maps has that route but also a slightly longer one through Cincinnati and Atlanta (90/271/71/75)
We plan to take about 3 days. Any suggestions are appreciated, keeping in mind our northern weather! Thanks!

We are from Rochester and we went the Google maps route. Anything to stay away from Washington and Atlanta. Welcome. I am sure you will not miss our Western New York winters one bit!

I'm just watching Good Morning America, I saw the weather forecast for Buffalo. I think I'd leave today if I was you. Just kidding. We are from Albany and are going up for the Holidays. Welcome

The snow always goes to the "Southtowns" here in WNY, and luckily we are in the "Northtowns." So no snow yet, maybe an inch or two later.
Unless I'm missing something, taking 81 is way out of the way for us. We would have to pick it up in Syracuse which is 2 1/2 hours due east. Seems like we could start South way before that!

Weather determines your route--be aware--get out of the hilly areas asap---look outdoor black ice--it happens in the south

I agree with Skiman. Take 81 south-77 south - 26 to 95 to 10 to 75. I just drove this route in late November from Central NY and picked up I-81 at Binghamton. Stayed one night in a motel half way down (In Wytheville, VA). There are two routes I avoid at all costs - Any route with a 95 in it around Washington, DC and 301 south from Jacksonville through all the speed trap villages and Ocala. Avoiding 301 by taking I-10 from Jacksonville to I-75 puts some extra mileage on the trip, but I believe takes about the same time but is easier on the driver.
