Would Alamogordo be a good mid way place to branch out from and do all these day trips?? am not familiar with NM so any tips would appreciate. thanks cc

Alamo is right on top of White Sands and within 2 hours of Cloudcroft, Ruidoso (Apache reservation) and Las Cruces (& Mesilla Park, a Billy the Kid haunt). It's a bit farther to Carlsbad (185 mi) and Roswell (118 mi) and both are over the mountains. It's been years since I lived there, so I have no idea about road quality of highways 82 & 70.

AAA always was a big help to me. Lots of maps and guides.

i remember visiting a great resort and casino in Ruidoso (which means noisy in spanish) years ago...owned by the apache tribe, iguess...i am sure it is much more built up by now but it was a lovely mountain town...check it out on internet....
