If you are looking for a nice day trip I recommend a visit to Cedar Key. We went there today. It is two hours north west from The Villages (44, 19, 24). I understand it use to be an old fishing village. It was charming and while very small it had a beach, shops, bars and restaurants. It is not fancy or upscale, but it was fun and relaxing and it was great being on the Gulf.

Ever since I read the Travis McGee novels I have wanted to visit Ceder Key. Decided to visit in November.
I read somewhere, that once upon a time, all the wood for pencils made in the USA came from Cedar Key!!

I love Cedar Key. Now they have golf carts driving down the streets. Do not expect anything much here, but very laid back and felt like a town in the olden days.
October 17th is their Seafood Festival and we went last year. The food at the tents was excellent. If you tried to eat at the restaurants, it would be a very long wait. AAA does offer a bus trip there for $35 and you do not have to be a member. However, you only have 4 hours there which is a bit rushed. They had a parade and we went to the Lighthouse on the boat ride. But then again we went to the island and were drenched in a rain storm and barely arrived back in time for the bus.
Some history from days past is that they can and do get flooded when really bad storms come by. Go to the Historical museum there and read up on it.
