We will be moving to TV next May. While both the wife and I are retired I would like to work part time. What are the job prospects for older workers. I will be 60 then but still in good shape. I have worked in both retail and restaurants for many years. Thanks

If you like working in resturants or reatil you might be able to find a job. I've been looking for a FT or PT job since September. I've yet to find anything that pays above minimum wage.

I'm a new RN and my interview at the hospital showed that there are nursing jobs available. I'd say the pay rate is about 30-40% lower than standard rates here in the Boston area. But at least it's a living wage compared to some other jobs in the area.

My wife inquired about retail (Kohls, Bealls etc.) and Texasfal is right, slightly above or just at minimum wage. I talked her into doing just volunteer work if she feels the need to do something meaningful.

Restaurants seem to be a different story depending on who is talking. While we were down there we saw many older servers and hosts. We tipped our usual 20% but I did see many folks tipping, what looked like, less. I have read on this site that servers down in/near TV make much less than other parts of the country.

I do think that there are available jobs but just be prepared for the wage shock.

My wife is a RDH, Registered Dental Hygienist, in California. Wages for RDH's in Fla are 25% of what she makes here. Also, to get a license in Fla she needs to take the National Board Exam again - she took it to get her license in Calif 30 years ago and would have to go back to school for maybe a year to prepare for the test. Don't think it will happen.

If you just want to work for "ha ha's" or to keep busy, there are plenty of part time jobs available here but most pay at or near minimum wage. The Villages employs lots of seniors in the Recreation Department working as "hosts" at rec centers, in Neighborhood Watch either at the gates or driving around, and other such jobs. Getting a PT job should be no problem - getting one you like and want may be a real challange.

I got my radiology license in Illinois in 1968. Worked from Illinois to Maine, to Nevada to Florida. Guess where I ended up not being able to get at least a part-time job? Yup, the Villages. Unless you work at the hospital or a orthopaedic imaging facility you can forget it.
I have a current Florida license (no good at the hospital or imaging center).
There must be 300 doctor's offices in the immediate area but none of them have a radiology suite. I sent out ton's of resumes and applications in the last 3 years, those I did get back stated that fact, "we have no x-ray".
Things sure are "differant" in the Villages.

RussRuss, 2 yrs ago when we decided to leave Pa for a future in TV I commented to prospective employers that the salaries in health care were a lot lower here in Florida... one responded, "didn't they tell you, they pay you with sunshine ?" Easier to get docs and nurses here than in the rust belt... supply and demand.

I imagine there are a lot more residents of TV seeking employment after seeing their 401-K's tank in the past 2 years.

The pay scale in FL has always lagged behind most of the US simply because it is a tourist destination state as well as one of the top areas for retirement. All that means minimum wage, part-time jobs. If you are planning to move to TV, think outside the box. Look to create your own business. There are no end of ways to make a living if you are willing to hustle.

I'm actually thinking of creating a course for the TV College on redefining retirement income. I'm a semi-retired career counselor with clients all over the US. I do all my work from home. We use Skype, email and phone... Lots of fun and a nice little income. I've been noodling around in my mind a fun course on how to job search in our golden years and recreate ourselves.
