Koyame is the only place I will go. Have tried all of the others including the one in Colony. It seems they need to step it up a notch on the flavor. I find their food tasteless. It is like the sauces are watered down. Maybe I just like mine a little spicy as they call it at Koyame.

Honestly folks--give this place a wide berth--especially if there are better places--any place will be better than the Evergreen

Believe it or not, the worst Chinese food I ever had was in China---9 straight days of the same crap for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meat would not pass FDA inspection for dog food. The veggies were at least 3 days past peak and often brown instead of green. It was the only vacation I ever lost 12 pounds on.

OP, you might try China Gourmet at Lake Denton Plaza. We have not tried it yet as it hasn't been open very long. I sort of expect it to be similar to the one in Colony which I wouldn't grade more than average at best. But worth a try.

Spent a week in Beijing to give some talks for work. I was wined and dined at what are presumably very good restaurants. By the end of the week I was requesting steamed vegetables. Came back a bit lighter also and there is virtually nothing I won't eat. I did enjoy the flight over and back in first class.

One summer about 30 years ago I was walking around Chinatown NYC and saw an open unrefrigerated box truck fully loaded with skinned ducks hanging from hooks. Truck was still there on my way back to work an hour later. The almonds don't fall too far from the tree.

Staffing .............. for one.

I contacted the new Rose Plantation for a luncheon reservation and was told they could not get a cook/chef for lunch. I believe, they have now found someone competent.

In their online listing for help they stress that RETIREES are encouraged to apply. What does that tell you.

For those of you who think there is no decent Chinese food in The Villages, have you tried Bamboo Bistro in the Target mall across from Jim's Golf? It's our go-to restaurant. It's Asian fusion cuisine, including Chinese, Japanese, sushi and others with an extensive (not expensive) menu. Every person I've taken there or recommended it to also like it. The food quality and flavors are great, and the service is excellent. The ambiance is good as well. Try it, you'll like it.

Really good Chinese restaurants are hard to find everywhere. Average seems to be the norm. Cheng's on 466 is good, and the portions are large enough for sharing. Went to Evergreen last month and had no complaints. Will definitely try Bamboo Bistro.

Where in China was this GE?

I supervised a beautiful married law student at the U of MN Law Library. We called her Joy because her Chinese name was hard to pronounce. She was very fit. She was from China along with her husband.

Were you on an escorted tour with meals provided? Also how many years ago.
I, myself did one in the early 90's and our food was bad also. We ate in restaurants with locals but when we looked at what they were eating is was not anything like our food. We even asked to try something else and offered to pay but they wouldn't do it. Very strict orders for dealing with Americans. They even searched our hotel rooms after we checked out to make sure we had not taken anything. Ha ha, the towels were the size of napkins and linen as rough and scratchy as wool.
Enjoyed the trip anyway and saw China before the enormous changes that have occurred in the past years.

You are correct. Evergreen is a family spinoff of China Gourmet in Colony Plaza. Both frequently have unsatisfactory ratings by the health department, and both have been closed at various times for failing to deal with serious violations.

The current rating for China Gourmet is 43 (out of 100). Evergreen currently has the highest rating I have seen it given. 93!

Panda Express? You have to be kidding! That's about as far from Chinese food as you can get. I spent most of my working life in downtown NYC and got used to having Chinatown, with its dozens of restaurants, close by. Having several Chinese colleagues who helped me handle the menus, some of which were not in English, was a positive too. Some restaurants were good, some were bad but all were better than Panda Express.

1. Should you have possibly let them know first. I run my own business also. If I goof (and we all do on occasion) I'd like to know before being smeared on the net. Maybe they would have made it right having been given a chance?? You never know.
2. Your wanting a refund for food you threw out last week?

I ate at Panda once. Maybe it was a bad day for them or maybe it's what some people consider good Chinese food. Each to his own. If you like it, that's what you should eat. If you knew anything about Chinatown you'd know that there is nothing hooty or snooty about these places. The streets are narrow, sidewalks are extremely crowded and fish and vegetable vendors line the sidewalks. Many, if not most restaurants are tiny storefronts. There are a few fancy places but not a place I used to go for lunch on a workday.

Coming from Chicago, my opinion is there are NO good "Chinese" restaurants here. The only place we go to is Bamboo Bistro which is Asian Fusion. Food is always very fresh and delicious, service is very good! The other night for $14.99 I had my favorite which is the Shrimp Moo Goo Gai Pan, the shrimp were huge and plentiful. Always take half home there's so much! Koyame is ok probably the best of anyone the others but after being there several times and the food having a burnt oil taste to it so we don't go unless were desperate. So may places here do not use the veggies I'm used to like bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, some will give you one or 2 snow pea pods, and a couple of water chestnuts. Sorry just peas and carrots in my fried rice don't cut it.

there's a place in Orlando/Kissimmee about 1/2 mile from the Peabody Hotel that I think was called the Emperor of China or something similar. We ate there in 1992 and it was fantastic. The chef was an internationally recognized master, they even held cooking classes there. No idea if it is still there or if that chef still runs it.
