Been living in The Village of Hemingway for a few months now--and realize that my Sprint service isn't going to "cut it" here. Most calls are dropped. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions--Best Buy suggested Net10.

Thanks,
Lynn

We have AT&T and the only way we can use it is to have the cell phone plugged into the charger....don't know why it works better but it does. It doesn't matter how many bars is showing  we have to plug it in to the charger. Give it a try...who knows... it works for us...we are in Duval.

We have AT&T and have had no problems. And we don't have to have it plugged into the charger. Hope this helps.

Oh...forgot to add that we have a pay as you go phone. As long as you add a minimum of $25 every 3 months, your unused money is rolled over. We have a house in Hemingway.

Could it maybe be something wrong with your phone? I have had Sprint for as long as I have had a cell phone and I have no problems with it anywhere in TV. The only time I've had a problem is my fault for not charging after a lengthy conversation and then not having enough charge left until I do, but no dropped calls.

Sprinit has terrible coverage especially south of 466. I use NEXTELL which is owned by sprint but uses different towers and is also used by most construction workers here in TV....I now have excellent coverage with no dropped calls.

Just ordered cell service online with your new sponsor puretalkusa; will give it a try. Before ordering online, I called their customer service to question something and must say that I was so very pleased that there was no long delay in response time and the person was very helpful and pleasant. Good customer service which is a big plus!!!

Thanks for your responses. Nothing wrong with my phone--it is just SPRINT....confirmed all of that.

Coverage area with the new sponsor is too limited for me....I am going to go with NET10 (Best Buy said that it has been most popular for those by Colony Cottage)...It is pay as you go--comes with 300 free minutes--phone is inexpensive ($35) and you only have to add $15 of minutes a month....all unused minutes roll over month to month. I don't want to sign a contract again--so, hopefully this will work.

Will post to let you know...

I live in Hemingway and had Sprint last winter and experienced a lot of dropped and missed calls while in the house - as is usually the case, outdoor reception was generally fine. We have changed to Verizon and have had pretty good luck since then.

I have learned that there is no one "best" solution around the country and that even small changes in locale can have a difference due to tower locations. When we were up in NJ, we lived in an area where Sprint was fabulous but Verizon was horrible.

I have to agree that Sprint isn't good here in Hemingway, as we could only get a signal out of doors. We let the contract run out and got Verizon, which is a little better at our house but still not great...and it's hard to wait until 9 p.m. to use free minutes.

I have found that because most of the houses built in the south end of The Villages are framed with metal that it causes interference when inside the house. There are cell phone repeaters or boosters you can buy that will increase the signal inside the house for all but Nextel.

Just to followup on our new service that some requested our "take" on it.

Well we've had quite a time with our new cell phone. At first we couldn't get the phone to keep a charge. Customer Service is extremely pleasant, cognizant of the problem and eventually all was resolved to our satisfaction. No long waiting for a cust serv rep response either. The quality of the line service works fine and we are so very pleased with our choice.

My daughter also signed on for the service and just bought the card for $9 something and inserted the card into her cell phone she had used with Verizon. I imagine that you must have a fairly recent cell phone to be able to do that. She too is pleased with it all.

The price is fantastic and the convenience of no contract wherein one can cancel at any time and no line or tax charges is a big PLUS.

They transferred my same cell phone NUMBER from Verizon in minutes of receiving the phone and we made sure that we could keep the same number. I didn't even have to cancel with Verizon account (my two-year contract was up at this time and was on a month-to-month basis with Verizon) as the new provider did that upon transferring our number.

Even with our rocky start, they came through for us in good time and I would highly recommend the service.

Thanks for the update....
The coverage area wasn't what I wanted with "our sponsor"...so, I went with NET10.

I am not having any problem with service---they also would transfer my old cell phone number to the new phone. The telephone was inexpensive and I can get refills on the minutes at almost any drug store, or on-line or right from the cell phone itself.

I am MUCH happier with this service than with SPRINT....and I like that I can "pay as I go". I am finding that I use the cell phone far less often down here than I did up North--not sure why. I also have unlimited long-distance on my land-line (maybe that is why I use the cell phone less often)..for $19.99/mo with Comcast...

Thanks for the update.

When we first moved to Virginia Trace our cell phone service was not good. We were told by Verizon to be patient and it would get better once the new tower was turned on and fine tuned. That got delayed (hurricanes took the crews elsewhere) but we remained patient - we had service, just not the greatest and had to step outside on occasion. Happy to say the service did dramatically improve to the point where I had kind of forgot about it. We now live in Hemingway and use our cell phones without any issues at all. We have had Verizon service for years and traveled around the country and Canada. Have used the phones for internet service (tethered to a laptop as well as using the phone's browser) with success in 90% of the areas we traveled, and those poor areas were a few years ago, the service may have improved.

So much for my Verizon pitch - I don't think I even own stock in Verizon, but my mother does.

We live in Hadley and the reception is horrible with both Embarq and Cingular. We need some more cell towers in the south end.

I had the same problem when I moved to Hemingway, my T-Mobile would only work if I sat by the living room window, then it would cut out anyway. I switched to Verizon and have had no problems.

If one is not prone to long conversations on the cell phone, Tracfone is foolproof anywhere in TV. By nature of my business, I have received calls from one end to the other.
