and assistants are a figment of the manager who claims they need them. We eliminated all of the no questions asked. The pre condition was to find a way to do without one or we would find some one who could. Not one complaint! Not one problem.

Of course we all know it doesn't work that way in Washington becuase they have all the money they want to pay people to do nothing.

A side note....based on what we see publicly.....she certanly ain't gettin' her monies worth:jester:

There a $1Million+ in salaries, plus approx 28% fringe benefits, plus whatever other expenses they have - per year, plus inflation.

I guess the stimulus is creating more jobs....

Government spending reductions have to begin somewhere. But I've got to be honest--in the grand scheme of things in Washington, spending $1.2 million on the First Lady doesn't really get my dander up.

I'll tell you what gets me more excited, as an example...the Obama administration made it clear it opposes any further funding for the production of F-22 Raptor jet fighters. The Office of Management and Budget said the funding for more F-22 fighters runs counter to the "collective judgment" of the military's top leaders and the Defense Department. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said production of the jets should stop after 187 have been built. He said the jet does not fit well into 21st century warfare and further production costs are not included in his proposed DOD budget. Congress has decided it knows better and has included $1.75 billion in appropriations so that more of the jets can be built. (Lots of constituents in New York and California work in the plane plants, you know.)

Now that's the kind of crap that gets me excited. Michelle Obama can have three social secretaries as far as I'm concerned. When Congress starts to get serious about spending, they can cut the budget for the operation of the Office of the President. The House can do that, you know. Let's place the blame where it belongs. At least the President rejected the idea of a new fleet of helicopters for use as "Marine Ones". He was happy with the old helicopters and nixed the idea of spending $6.1 billion to build the 28 new "star wars-equipped" helicopters to form the Marine One fleet.

Kayaker is right. Every single Senator--all 100 of them--spend more on their staffs, many a whole lot more, than Michelle Obama spends for her staff. Social secretaries?...phfisssh. Let's get serious.

Did anyone check to see how much Laura Bush's aids made during the Bush Adminstration?

I think the nixing of new Presidential Fleet Copters was a mistake.
The current birds (Vietnam era) are a heck of a lot older than the pilots that fly them. Spare parts are a BIG problem, since a lot of the OEM's no longer exist. It's not like walking into your local Chevy dealer's parts department. I think they are close to the point where a new Fleet, based on current birds, would be cheaper than the upkeep on the old Fleet. :beer3:

They need to hire a fashion consultant for Michelle. It would be well worth the money.

LOL I wonder what kind of gift they gave the Kremlin crowd. Maybe a DVD set of Obama's favorite apology speeches?

Kayaker, It's not that often we agree, but I do agree with you on this one. The current fleet is badly out of date. I wish two things could happen; (1) The Presidential helicopter be a a variant of one that proved useful to our armed forces - the first model of any military aircraft is incredibly expensive and the costs need to be spread over a much higher production run that is useful to the US. (2) The total production needs to be carefully evaluated - I can understand the need for nine and possibly twelve - but 28?!

Here's a link to the Bush administration salaries in 2008: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/opinions/graphics/2008stafflistsalary.html

They look pretty much the same, although I didn't go thru them all line by line.

There's probably a point of diminishing return in replacing this "fleet" which consists of only a few birds. The number of flying hours they accrue each month is not very high, and they are all specially equipped and reinforced with "stuff" that are not found elsewhere in DOD. As an analogy, it's llike looking at a NASCAR racing car which, from the outside, looks like that Ford or Chevy on the dealer's lot, but when you go "under the skin" there is no comparison. So, in this case, it could be more cost-effective to keep these bids than replace them and 3-times the copy-costs for birds which only look the same as other USMC craft.

The "staff salary" issue for Congress and non-elected persons is indeed a good place to cut costs, especially when Congress wastes more money than any of the bailed-out companies. Even if it's considered only symbolic, it's a good symbol. It's called "leading by example."

I read the original post which did not mention the Bush Administration salaries....I guess how much people are paid only counts when there is a D behind the Presidents name.

There is a reason for that. This thread is about the present administration. Why don't you start your own thread and have it exactly the way you want it.
