I think if you want to place furniture in the middle of the room vs. against each wall there is a place to plug in a floor lamp or a lamp on a side table. A lot of the homes have a great room kind of set up and many times furniture is placed away from the walls. That's only my theory, actual residents would know more.

It's a large room and lot's of people like to "float" a couch out there. If they do, an end table can't have a lamp without running an extension. So a lamp (or whatever) can be plugged into the outlet under the couch. We have our furniture configured that way and the outlet is great there. But I can understand the issue if you don't have the couch or chairs there.

You're right, Steve. My son's townhome in Jacksonville has it that way. His furniture divides the living area from the dining area and in order to have the small table lamp between the sofa and love seat without having cords strung across the floor, the outlet is in the floor. Their floors are hardwood and they simply position the sofa just over the plug. Works great.

I have two of those floor outlets and one is in the living room that is open with very little wall space and our furniture does float in the room so we can put a table and lamp by that area . The other one we place in our media room because once again not a lot of wall space and the chairs are away from the wall, and the plug is right where we put the table so we can have a lamp there. Our plugs do have brass plates that cover the plugs when not in use. One plug is in the wood floor and the other plug is in carpeted area. I guess it is just preference but since we have a lot of open spaces we didn't want to be tripping over cords.

If you've ever been on the stage at Savannah Center, COTS or Northlake Lutheran Church, you will see plugs all over the floor. Same reason ........
If you have a need for juice for something in the middle of an area, you need not run a 30 ft extension cord from a wall plug. Safety and practicality.
