Her name is "Kirsten" and I envision her as a delightful young lady from a small farm in Austria. She has a beautiful voice and knew that her vocal talents would be confined to regional theaters if she stayed in Europe. So, she stowed away in the complicated confines of my BMW as it was being built. Her ambition is to audition for the Metropolitan Opera in New York but I find her so pleasant to be with on those long trips I won't remove one of the speaker covers to let her out. Am I being selfish?

Samantha. Sometimes its seems she performs magic to get us where we want to be.
We named ours Betty after Mr. JoC's classmate who talks a lot but knows what she's talking about. On the other hand, we had to fire our Aussie gal last year when we were visiting the Gulf and she kept telling us to turn onto Gulf Doctor instead of Gulf Drive. It took us a while to figure out what she was talking about. Funny though.

nONIE,
I've noticed this thread whenever I've cruised by TOTV today. Gotta admit, had NO desire to open it and read the rapidly increasing number of posts. I thought this was going to be the epitome of lame, like that poor little dog at the Crafts show dressed in some kid of top and sunglasses. SUNGLASSES!!! You just know that little fella would have gladly jumped into the mouth of the nearest gator just to stop the embarrassment. But I digress.
This evening I read thru this thread. Comments about my social life aside, I was very pleasantly surprised at the wellspring of different comments you solicited. I enjoyed it thoroughly, so much in fact that I may have to get a GPS just so I can name her/him/it.

Who would have thought...............
Kylie is the Australian babe who routinely and continuously
tells me where to go.
So, between Kylie and Mrs. Tony I am sure to never get lost.
An aside, though, about Mrs. Tony. I am assured of never
having to spend a lot of time in jail if I am ever convicted of
something. She has never let me finish a sentence.
Don't tell her I said this.

We have had two...
The first was a Tom Tom and they are a British company, so she would say things like "Take the Motorway" which sounded silly with an American accent. So we picked a British woman's voice and named her Jane after the perfect Jane Fairfax (in Jane Austen's Emma).
The 2nd one doesn't allow you to choose the voice (we think because it also reads off the actual streets). The simulated voice sounds faintly Scandinavian (yet bossy), so Jim named her Olga. Picture a very strong massage therapist....

Now I will have to get rid of my Garmin and get a TomTom to get the voice to Homer Simpson. Garmin missed the boat on that one.

We named ours Suzie. She really gets upset when she continually has to recalcuate. Even when you have to go to a rest area to go to the bathroom. What an amazing invention for us who are directionally challenged.

Just to add a little levity:
If you've gone to the "trouble" of naming your GPS contact, have you also named:
Your automobile?
Your golf cart(s)?
Your house?
'Twould be fun to know!

Swrinfla,
I think the reason that so many people name their GPS is because she talks to us, tells us where to go, so we feel a bonding with the lady, or gentlemen whatever the case may be. Whereas we cant really put a voice with our car, our golfcart , etc.

I would LOVE to write a script of some real sassy things for Mz. GPS to say when the driver continues to ignore the directions. Oh the joy of what I would write. A little exasperation and maybe have her say a few cuss words. I bet they could sell it!

Can you get the voice in the car with which you can argue without getting a GPS? Don't need nor especially want a GPS but y'all have made the voice sound kinda fun.

Muncle, have you named your Yesteryear Kart?
swrinfla

nONIE:
I know very well that, if I had a GPS system, "she" would undoubtedly have a name. But, I remain more inclined to use a folding paper map and my gut to help me find where I am going!
My flying brother loves to ask his on-board system where we are, then he surveys where he is to see if the system (no name, yet) is right!
I suppose one of these days I will replace my car ("Mayflower") and will probably get one with a GPS whose name will be determined by her personality. I don't think I will need a system in my golf cart ("La Sotisse") because I don't wander off well-worn tracks in her.
And, the house doesn't need a GPS because it ("Le Chateau de la Regle") just sits here.
SWR
P.S.: La Sotisse is French for "folly." That's what I thought having a golf cart when I don't play the game meant!

Muncle, have you named your Yesteryear Kart?
No, Bare, I given the cart no name nor determined its sex. So far, it's just a collection of parts artfully assembled to do a function, like a toaster or weed eater. Maybe if I had a yacht, I'd call it a her and refer to "her" by name. but more likely I'd just call it "the boat." I guess I got no imagination.
I do mumbled to myself occasionally when I see the still new to me Kart, generally something along the lines of "What a waste! What in the He11 were you thinking when you bought that!" :22yikes:

Ha Ha! What a cute thread. I was delighted to learn that "almost everybody" has named their GPS. Ours is Olivia. It was the name I had picked out for our granddaughter. The parents didn't go along with me, so now I have my own little Olivia. I can go anywhere and she never loses her patience with me!
