I don't know if I am just suspicious, but a couple new posters sound like ...trolls to me. I am trying to be gracious and welcoming so I don't get in trouble, but in the last couple of weeks some new posters just sound like they aren't really what they appear to be and kind of maybe looking to stir the pot.

Is it just me?

Gee Gracie, your ahead of me on that. I haven't been paying much attention lately, too busy socializing here in SoHad but I will start checking things out more. I love mysteries..... and BTW you sure were welcoming and I was trying to be also, but alas I was too late!!

What is a troll??

Per wikipedia:

Troll:
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or collaborative content community with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional or disciplinary response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.

Sock Puppet:
The term sock puppet refers to someone who is simultaneously registered under different pseudonyms on a particular message board or forum. The analogy of a sock puppet is of a puppeteer holding up both hands and supplying dialogue to both puppets simultaneously. A sock puppet will create multiple accounts over a period of time, using each user to debate or agree with each other on a forum. Sock puppets are usually found when an IP check is done on the accounts in a forum.

Flame:
To flame someone means to go off-topic and attack the person rather than their opinion. Likely candidates for flame wars are usually religion and socio-political topics, or topics that discuss pre-existing rivalries outside of the forum (eg: rivalry between games console systems, car manufacturers, nationalities, etc.)

Wow Chuck. Again you have educated me. I kinda knew what a troll was but never heard of a sock puppet or a flame. Now that I think of it I can see this happens........even here occasionally.

Well done Chuck, thanks for the education. I certainly know what a troll is and we've had a few trolls here on TOTV that were very inflammatory.

I didn't know about sock puppets (love the term) and flaming .. (although I've certainly noticed some flaming on the political threads)!

Gracie, I agree with you that there are some people posting that may be trolls, though they are very "undercover" about it. I just did not know how to say it. Thanks! Pat

No offense meant Chuck, as I know we have had "trolls' on here lately. But Julie happens to be an extremely nice person that I have been in contact with since she has joined TOTV. Perhaps...like alot of us newbies search the forum to gather info on TV and then sign in new to get to know the TOTV'ers. Not to hard to figure out other's names after reading for awhile.

As I was posting that question, I figured that would be the answer. It just seemed unusual.

And, You're Welcome, to all who have commented on the definitions of Troll, Flame and Sock Puppet. (sure seems to be a lot of flaming in the TOTV posts - especially considering they are coming from residents and wannabe's of the friendliest town around.)
