My wife and I may have to put my mother-in-law in an assisted living facility soon. There are so many choices we do not know where to start. A memory care option is not a high priority. If you have any recommendations as to which facility you think is good and why, we would appreciate it if you would share your thoughts. Thank you.

I can recommend Atria on 466 near Rolling Acres Rd. My 96 yr old mother has been a resident now for 5 years. She likes the care she is getting. She was in the assisted living section but moved to the memory care section for the last year
They have many activities, order from a menu at meal times and even a pub with happy hour 3 days a week.
Their # is 259-8185

We used Mission Oaks, and would highly recommend, also, do a search on this site, there was a similar thread a couple of months ago, with lots of info.

After much research, I chose Mission Oaks for my mother and father, after researching all of the ALF's in the area. MO has a memory care unit as well. If and when she reaches the point where skilled nursing is required, that will be a different story, as MO is not a Skilled Nursing Facility.

I myself have had no direct dealing with Mission Oaks, but a very dear friend had her mother-in-law there and was quite pleased with it.

The food leaves a lot to be desired.

Contact - A Place for Mom.com they will have a good feeling for each facility - go to each facility unannounced at meal time - talk to the residents - draw up a list of your requirements - note that you may get caught up in their pharmacy (blister packing drugs) - ask them to explain the extra services costs - look at whether they will take your loved one to appointments (only on certain days) - it all depends on what you are looking for and what you are willing to give up - look at how the building is maintained - how the building was built (stick built or block) - request special pricing - ask that they waive the sign up fees - ask if they will lock in the rates for the length of her stay

Watch if you want independent living and they offer that plus assisted and memory care. The residents will be more on the road to memory care.

Have your loved one try out a facility using their respite care which allows you to reside without bringing your furniture, etc for a short period of time. This will allow your loved one and you and better evaluate the facility for permanent placement.
