I played Hawks Bay yesterday. I must have repaired 10 divots per green, but sometimes I couldn't find mine.
I love our courses and we all need to help keep them in great shape.

On the green they are "pitch marks" not divots. Divots are taken with irons and woods where the ball lies. You put sand in them. You wouldn't want someone to call you by the wrong name would you? :-)

i'm not a golfer but my other half is and has been for many years. I've heard it said in our home that there are many/many who don't know the rules of the game. There "might" be a few who don't care. It's unfortunate that folks don't care for how they treat property. Wonder what they'd think of someone came into their yards and did the like to their lawn??!!

Do they truly not know about golf etiquette?
Do they not want to know?
Do they know but just don't care?
All of the above.

Yep, ball marks. And thank you for fixing them. I remember signs that said 'fix yours plus one'. If everyone did, there would be no plus one, but alas ...

What I hate more than ball marks are gouge marks on the green where it appears as if someone drove their club into the green. It must be done from extreme frustration and no respect for the course.

Ball marks = pitch marks. You just hear them called ball marks much more frequently.

Not finding fault at all. That was just an FYI. I agree...fixing them is what matters. Call them anything you want. :)

'Ball Mark' versus 'Pitch Mark.'
Both names are correct...and synonymous with each other.
What Is a Ball Mark in Golf? (https://www.thoughtco.com/ball-mark-golf-definition-1560759)
Ball Mark
Definition:
The indentation that a ball makes in the surface of the putting green upon landing. (Pitch mark is the synonym.) The softer the surface of the putting green, the more likely a ball mark is to result, and the more like that ball mark is to be larger.
Ball marks should be repaired using special tools made for that purpose in order for the green to properly heal. For a tutorial, see How to Repair Ball Marks.
Also Known As: Pitch mark
Alternate Spellings: Ballmark
The USGA refers to them as "Ball Marks."

Reminds me of the dog park....I can't always find my dog's "divot" but always pick up other "divots" that I find while there

...The USGA refers to them as "Ball Marks."...
Yep. Far more frequently and I'd say more 'officially'. But 'pitch marks' is accepted by many people...even the USGA...as meaning the same thing.
Check one of the bullet lists in this article on the USGA website. Highly recommended reading by the USGA, "The Anatomy of a Pitch Mark":
