Good morning! Has anyone heard of or possibly know of a support group for people suffering with the after effects of spinal meningitis? I'm talking about adults, not children. I tried to start a search, but I had to keep filling out a verification and never got anywhere with it. Thanks for your help.

Could be a tough find, since spinal meningitis almost never has any "after effects"

Really?? What do you know about it? My brother-in-law contracted spinal meningitis after a routine sinus surgery. 5 years later he still suffers from a variety of ailments they can find no reason for. We are reading about it and seem to see there are lingering annoyances that are due to the meningitis. Is this not the case? I would be interested in any info you have, as they are running him from doctor to doctor, and he is about a nervous wreck right now. Thanks for your input.

What do I know about it? Actually, quite a bit. First of all we need a common vocabulary. Spinal meningitis is not really a medical term, but it generally refers to vial meningitis, which is a self limited illness that lasts about a week and rarely has any sequellae (after effects). This is why I thought it might be hard to find a support group. It doesn't mean that no one ever had sequellae, just that it is rare. Bacterial meningitis is usually much more severe and can have serious long term effects.

Since your brother-in-law developed it after sinus surgery, there is some possibility he had bacterial meningitis. Did they treat him with multiple antibiotics, or was his care just supportive?

Also, you mentioned he had "a variety of ailments they can find no reason for", which would seem to imply that they are not attributing his symptoms to the prior meningitis. Hopefully a cause is found and he gets better.

I think you mistook me. When I said what do you know about it, I typed it with no inflection. It was a real question, not sarcasm. OK..that being said, thanks for your response. Yes, they treated him with antibiotics. We think it has to do with his "mental state" regarding the meningitis and is actually some stress and anxiety he is bringing on himself. No doctor will say that though. They just test and re-test. He was prescribed some anti-anxiety and, actually, "depression" medication, which is what stops him from taking it...the depression part. He insists he isn't. Anyway, my brother was reading on some website that there can be some after effects. Most likely to occur when he is sick or run down he gets this weak leg feeling and face flushes and general malaise. Not normal for him and the website attributed that kinda stuff to a weakened nerve system from the meningitis, if you will. Understand, I have no medical background (hahaha...big surprise) and just repeating what we are reading. It's just a real dilemma. We cannot say he is not feeling these things, and have seen his face flushed, just can't put a finger on it. Again, thanks for your response and I was truly just asking the question to pick you brain. :)
Oh...but I will move forward looking at bacterial meningitis. That information in itself, may help us greatly in our research. He consistently says spinal meningitis. Many thanks.

Support Groups | Florida Spinal Cord Injury Resource Center (http://www.fscirc.com/support-groups)

Here's a link if this is Florida. Google spinal injury support groups with the state if this is somewhere else. If these people cannot help, they might have connections with some who will.

Good Luck to your brother-in law. And calm down, no point in getting upset over chat room.

Many thanks! I've had a go of it for the past year! Several surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. This year is looking up, thus far. I am on one of the new(ish) immunotherapy (kinase inhibitor) drugs. We'll never know if it's the drug or if the cancer was just done with me (and me, it!!), but I say, who cares?? As long as it's gone. :)
