Farm market

Does anyone know of a good farm market to buy home grown corn, tomatoes, etc.

Markets of Marion on north 441/27 north of TV. Their produce is excellent. Not sure about corn though. You can always buy the corn at Publix. Saw it the other day 4 ears $4. Yeah I said the same thing.

There are a number of places for fresh fruits and vegetables:

Leesburg farmers market is on Saturdays
Lady Lake farmers market is on Tuesday
(Not sure if either are still open but they both usually have a limited representation)

For larger selections try either:
Market of Marion - Sat & Sun
Webster flea market - Mondays
(Both of these markets have large selections to choose from)

We got some corn at the Lady Lake market in mid May and my wife says it is the best she has had since we moved here. But two weeks later we went back and they told us the season was over.

I agree...Brown's market is excellent. Their beefsteak tomatoes are sweet and I have not found a better market for veggies and fruits.

I am interested to see if the corn and tomatoes measure up to good ole' Ohio's quality.

My Aunt and Uncle lived for many years in Venice, Florida and came home every August to get the sweet corn and tomatoes back in Ohio. When they no longer could travel, some of us would send them down an iced package.

I have been told that you can't have sweet corn that is picked for more than one day and you should not keep it at boiling for more than one minute.

I have had corn from Ohio that would bring tears to my eyes.

I agree GG. Growing up, when ever we had corn, you put the water on to boil then go pick the corn.

Exactly where is Browns. Says on 301 West of 466, but 301 runs North South. So on 301 North of 466, or South of 466?

Brown's is North on 301 from 466, maybe a mile or so on your left as you're going North.

Another one is the "God bless you" farmers' market. I call them that b/c they say that to you when you buy anything, and there's no name that I've seen. Located on 466 East of Morse, just past the little strip mall on your left as you're going East. The entrance is a little hard to see the first time, but you can pass it by and do a u-turn at the next opportunity and go back to it. They have great peaches in season, and give you samples. I never take the samples as they use their bare hands (ugh - may not be clean). Still a good place.

Just discovered Brown's myself and its great! L2, its North of 466 on the left side of the road. Actually, pretty close to the 42, if I remember correctly.

I have also been very happy with Fresh Market though, they had the greatest Crenshaw and Casaba melons that I miss so much since leaving CA...

One of the things that I have been disappointed in is Florida produce. Since so much of the produce that you get up North during the off-season comes from Florida, I thought that being closer to the source would result in really great produce. That has not been the case. I think the reason for this is that the produce has been bred for shipping and not flavor. The biggest disappointment is in strawberries. When the local-grown, Plant City berries are in season they have the same tasteless and juiceless characteristic as those shipped north. The good news is that they seem to be priced a bit lower than up North and the season does last a LOT longer than the few weeks of northern strawberries.

As a New Yorker, I too am disappointed with the produce, the supermarket stuff is the same old, same old. Markets of Marion is a blessing. How about the lack of fresh fish /raw bar restaurants.

Kathie, we even get Crenshaw and Casaba melons in NY, we miss them here too.

There is also a small stand on 301 going south towards Wildwood. They are under a large grove of oaks, and I enjoy picking fresh vegetables and fruits from their stands.

We go to a farm market that is just north of 466A on 441. Good prices and a variety of produce. In the winter it is a large flea market - somewhat primitive but fun to peruse. Handy for those of us who live south.

My friend's hubby is an executive chef up north....they told me to put milk and a tablespoon of sugar in the water for boiling corn. Six minutes is the best time and no longer.

GracieGirl: I, too, love the corn and tomatoes from Ohio! We've always gone to the Millersport Sweet Corn Festival during Labor Day weekend and the corn-on-the-cob practically melts in your mouth! The Ohio River's tomatoes are great, too, and we've sure eaten our share of BLT sandwiches around here.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions on good farm markets. We will definately check them out when we get down there. Only a year to go and WE CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!! SookeyJo in Ohio
