Walked into our closed garage at mid-day today (full sunshine and 90 degrees outside) and the temperature in the garage was a manageable 84 degrees.

I was in someone else's house the other day and walking into the closed garage was like walking into a furnace...it had to be over a hundred degrees in there.

So, why the difference? We did have extra insulation installed above the garage and have a solar attic fan up there too. I wonder if this explains the dramatic temp difference.

Other factors were pretty equal...both houses are stucco, have a side window, and similar size. Our garage faces SW, the other faces East ... but, we're talking midday.

Cannot answer ur question, but will only comment that my garage also is like a furnace for a good part of the day. Not sure if attic insulation would make it cooler though. Hot air rises so no insulation would assist in keeping the attic cooler. Extra insulation in the walls and insulation in the garage doors I believe would make it much cooler.

I would think that the garage facing east would have already heated up during the morning as the sun came up. And, are the garage doors the same? There are some really nice insulated garage doors available.

From our experience, extra insulation did help, but we noticed the greatest difference after we had a couple of solar attic fans installed a couple of years ago.

Vo7,

This is something we have wondered about. Our garage faces west - and still gets VERY hot in the afternoon. Furnace is an apt description. We have solar fans (2) and extra attic insulation. We have confirmed that the fans are working. Would love to get the temp down.

Our garage faces NE, midday inside the garage is usually at or below ambient temp, we do have 2 vents in the garage door and a vent in the ceiling of the garage (just a vent no fan) and a solar vent fan on the roof...........GN
