This is a quote from a "Letter to the Editor" section of the paper from back home which I thought is good food for thought.

"The time has come for true statesmen to lead our country, re-establishing the foundation of liberty, faith and wisdom. Citizens must recognize the true statesman and avoid the politicians that are chipping away at our nation's foundation. Maybe the quote by James Freeman Clarke could help us, "A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation."

see the article from this mornings news and one will readily see there are NO statesmen in the current administration of either party.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125072573848144647.html

The obvious emphasis emerging is to find a way to meet Obama’s pledge “to pass health care legislation yet this year”. So to accomplish one’s goal all one has to do is redefine the definition. That is convenient. Now all we have to do is try to understand what is in what piece. And once again those famous WH words are on the docket…..to move as quickly as possible.

This proposed tactic is designed to accomplish only one objective; prepare a bill that will be rammed through the system by the Democratic majority.
In so doing they meet Obama’s promise. Really?

And this activity does what to Obama’s statement that…….this is not about him……this is not about politics.

It also suggests the current administration is preparing to move ahead on a given proposal, regardless what we the people are saying to our representatives….that is both parties. I assume the Democratic rank and file understand they are not insulated from the effects of partisan legislation…..good or bad results.

We the people are about to be had in spite of speaking out. The only retribution is the coming elections in 2010 and 2012.

If there is a positive in the current posturing I look forward to hearing what they are. And if there are any statesmen in the process I would like to hear who they are.

..."A politician thinks of the next election; a statesman of the next generation."...Whatever has happened to the societal and cultural values in the U.S., the result has been the almost total elimination of "statesmen". I can't think of even one among the 435 in the current 111th Congress.

Agree. Perhaps thats because to be a member of the 435 (and the 100 club) one must first sell his/her soul to the DNC/RNC in order to get campaign support.

...one must first sell his/her soul to the DNC/RNC in order to get campaign support. If it was only the DNC/RNC, that wouldn't be so bad. But when the hospital corporations and drug company lobbies are spending $1.4 million a day (from a CNN report today) lobbying Congress regarding the current healthcare reform legislation, it kind of makes you wonder who else the members of Congress are selling their soul to?

Ahhh, yes. "...government: of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth". But then, I guess maybe none of the 435 has ever taken the time to read the Gettysburg Address.

....funny you should say that, VK. With all that has been going on around the health care issue, I, too, have been hearing some of the words from the Gettysburg Address ringing in my ears.....

......."conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal"......

....but who would have ever thought that those honored words would begin to look like they consist of two phrases that have become mutually exclusive.

and then there is......"Now we are engaged in a great civil war"......
